Yukon Party raps costs of YG’s ‘haphazard’ website

The Yukon Party is criticizing the cost of the government’s new website, which is partially launched alongside the territory’s new logo.

Opposition MLA Scott Kent called the site a “vanity project,” and accused the government of spending more than double the original budget on its construction.

“I think they certainly have underestimated the costs here, and we can’t get staff figures out of the premier,” Kent told the Star this morning. “Obviously, it’s poor planning.”

In a news release announcing the website’s launch in February 2018, the government estimated an initial $250,000 would be spent in 2017-18 on planning and design, while $33,000 would be spent on a content migration strategy.

Premier Sandy Silver told the house last Tuesday that $550,000 has been spent on the website’s development thus far. The transition from the old website is slated for completion by the end of 2020.

In a breakdown of spending, Silver said the initial $250,000 was spent in 2017-18, with an additional $200,000 spent in 2018-19 and $100,000 spent so far this year.

Kent questioned the increase in content migration costs, which was originally budgeted at $33,000.

The Information Resources Management Committee, however, made a request for $288,000 for content migration, as evidenced by an internal memo provided by the Yukon Party.

“Clearly … they’ve significantly underestimated that piece,” Kent said.

He expressed frustration that the government is not outlining the cost of staffing the website transition.

Silver told the house last week that staffing numbers have been written into the budget but were not included in the $550,000 spent so far.

The old website is still in operation while content is being moved over, at an estimated cost of $100,000 this year.

Approximately 11,000 site pages are being moved into the new webspace, a task Silver said is 70 per cent complete.

Silver said nearly 3,000 feedback forms from Yukoners have been completed since the site’s launch in 2018.

Once the new website is complete and the old space killed, Silver said maintenance on the new site will cost $75,000 annually. This is approximately half the cost of the previous platform. He called the new website a “cost-savings” measure.

He defended the spending as necessary to the modernization of government services.

“The new website has been designed to meet today’s standards for privacy, security, accessibility and also compatibility on other mobile devices as well,” Silver said.

“We believe that providing the modern website is fundamental to citizens being the centre of an open and transparent government.”

Both Kent and NDP MLA Liz Hanson have criticized the new website’s functionality.

In the house last week, Hanson said the site “fails basic usability tests” and hinders Yukoners’ access to information.

Kent told the Star this morning that he finds the website, particularly as it is in the transitional stage, to be challenging.

He explained that while manoeuvring the new site, certain links will bounce you back to the old webspace, making the platform confusing.

“That’s not (common practice) in my experience; normally, you develop a new website and then you implement the new website once it’s ready,” Kent said.

“This one seems extremely haphazard.”

Public Servant - It makes sense to you because you work inside the government. For those who don't and that's whom the website is intended for, it does.

The eServices team has published a number of blog posts about these very topics, such as https://eservices.gov.yk.ca/en/blog/our-plan-transition-rest-our-old-website-content-yukonca

All of their blog posts are at https://eservices.gov.yk.ca/blog. A lot has been going behind the scenes!

Joe...you must be a Liberal staffer - big colorful headings that lead to nowhere and no information are not helpful in the slightest. You literally have to read, decipher and think about every heading just to figure out where the thing you are looking for might land. But nice try there trying to save face for your colleagues.

As someone who uses the "website" a LOT for my job IN the government, I have never seen such a crapshow as this website change. YG website used to be one of the best. You could find forms, publications, reports, and anything else you could possibly need to do anything in life. Now they have simplified it to the point that it is more complex. And they do not plan on moving ANYTHING over to it. So yes, I appreciate the Yukon Party for bringing this to the attention of the public, because it is a horrible waste of money, all for the sake of the Liberals "rebranding" anything and everything they can to put their mark on. How about spend money on things that are useful. I have never seen such a wasteful government in my 20+ years.

$500 thousands... That could cover the cost of raising the subsidies for medical travel for "YUKONERS" that live in the communities and then some.

What a beautiful web site. It's so easy to drive around especially if you don't know the big long department names and what falls under what department. I think you'd have to be blind, deaf and dumb not to appreciate the ease of finding things here but then again some are computer illiterate or just not trying. Money well spent in the name of effectiveness and efficiency.

Instead of all this name-calling and finger-pointing as politicians and the public like to do, the government should release a brief report outlining how their new website is being used by people and how it's better (or worse) than the previous version and in what ways. That would be very useful.

Can't afford to staff ambulances in the communities, but you've got an extra $500k to spend on a website? Shameful.

The "New and Improved" YG website sucks! You can't find anything on it and the search functions fail as well.
Tax-payer money poorly spent. They should stop listening to the propeller-head geeks who live on their cell phones and involve some regular Yukon people to develop the architecture of the site and include some seniors who are not as web savvy. It is supposed to be an information tool for all of us, but its more like a treasure hunt to find what you are looking for.

This is like the Wann road disaster - “it will cost this but oops we had “misinformation” now it is double. The new logo was a joke why was this necessary - so the Liberals would have a lasting legacy? Why is it there everything they do costs double than the original price ? $75,000 a year to maintain the website ? When is the election - what is the update on the Wann road money pit ? Is it open or are they still renovating the 2 million dollar castle?

Every YTG employee had to get new business cards, new letterhead. Any department that wore a uniform had to get new shoulder patches. Some or maybe all had to get new badges. That all adds up to the overall cost.

Hey Scott Kent, get yourself an elected leader before you even begin to criticize their parties procedures. The Yukon Party is the ultimate in hypocrisy.

Since the Yukon Liberals were elected, they haven't done one constructive good for homeless but bandaid and discuss it. But plenty of money for a web site that most Yukoners won't ever see or care about.

If the intent was to decrease transparency by making navigation hard, next to impossible to find reports and what is happening in departments then the genius in the Liberal Cabinet that signed off on this deserves a 10 out of 10. The old website was 100x better than this gong show.
