The Yukon Party has opened the nomination process to select a candidate in the Lake Laberge riding for the coming territorial election.

By Whitehorse Star on January 26, 2021

The Yukon Party has opened the nomination process to select a candidate in the Lake Laberge riding for the coming territorial election.

The nomination period, which opened Monday, will close Feb. 8.

Brad Cathers has represented the riding for the party since 2002, except when he sat as an independent MLA between 2009 and 2011.

The nomination process will be guided by the party’s recently ratified rules and procedures.

This is the second of 18 ridings the party will open for nominations in preparation for the election. Nominations for Mountainview opened last Friday.

Party leader Currie Dixon has already been confirmed in his riding of Copperbelt North.

The Yukon Party has also opened the nomination process to select candidates in Kluane, represented by the party’s Wade Istchenko, and Whitehorse West, currently held by cabinet minister Richard Mostyn.

Nominations in those ridings opened Tuesday and will close on Feb. 9.

@groucho - well that’s just the point there Groucho. He doesn’t go to the houses of the folks he doesn’t think will vote for him, so he avoids the hard convos entirely and only talks to the folks he knows or likes in his riding. Perhaps all that will change this time around!

@ Patty Eyre
If your friend has something she believes Mr. Cathers can help her with, she can contact him and ask for help. He is very approachable and keen to help where he can. I'm glad I don't see politcians at my door beyond the election term, but I know how to involve them if I need to. Politics is a two way relationship.

@Groucho: a very good friend of mine lives down Horse Creek road, and the right honourable Brad Cathers has never once been to her house the whole time he’s been a MLA. I live in PC and have seen Ranj a few times. So, you tell me, is Bradley too busy repping the interest of my friend who lives in his riding and he’s never met, or is it that he just panders to his base?

@What if
What you are asking about is the concensus system of governance as they have in the NWT. It has pros and cons as well Read about it here: https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/premier#:~:text=In%20the%20NWT%E2%80%99s%20consensus%20system%20of%20government%2C%20the,based%20on%20the%20priorities%20of%20the%20Legislative%20Assembly.

@Groucho
Yes Brad is a true principled conservative (aside from always wanting to grow government) it's really a shame he didn't win the leaderhship race. He was so close and now the Yukon Party has a leader who is more liberal than the Liberals. I won't even bother going to vote this year or any other year until the Yukon Party becomes a conservative party again. If we reward this march to the left wing by voting them in, it will keep getting worse.

@What if? No, under the Parliamentary system of governance, you can’t run for the office of Premier, because we don’t have a separate executive branch like in the American system. So the leader of the party that wins the most seats becomes the premier. Technically, I think it would be possible for the elected MLAs to get together after the election to select the premier, which is what occurs in the other two territories because they don’t have a system of political parties. But since we do have political parties, it inevitably becomes a de facto election of the party leader of the the majority party. In the case of an electoral tie between parties, there would then be an opportunity for negotiations between the party leaders to choose a premier, who would almost certainly be the leader of one or the other party.

What if you want to run but you don't connect with any party's platform or the people in that party? I doubt can one effect much change as an independent if the Premier is a party rep.
What if you want to be Premier, but don't want to bogged down with the policies and/or baggage of any party and instead just want to fix what you see wrong in the Yukon? Is there room for that?
If I ran for Premier as an independent and won (omg!), would the cabinet ministers be chosen from the successful MLAs (regardless of which party they are with)? Is it even a possibility to run for Premier without a party backing you?
So many questions. Where does one find answers to these questions?

PS I agree with you, Juniper and Groucho. This board has seen some incredibly interesting discussions. I appreciate it and look forward to reading it every day. As with you Juniper, I skim over the personal attacks as unwanted and unnecessary.

@Patti Eyre
Mr. Cathers has been my MLA for a number of years and I can say without hesitation that he represents his constituents very well. He provides us infomation on matters that may impact on us in some way and will greatly assist when we are having an issue with government or one of the departments. His honesty and dedication are second to none - name another MLA who gave up a cushy ministerial position to sit as an independent because of his conviction to do things above board in a clear and honest fashion. I have long hoped that other political wanna-bes have the same character and commitment to Yukoners as Mr. Cathers demonstrates.
So do you have a particular issue with him or are you just parroting the same anti-conservative rhetoric the left employs in pre-election times?

@ Ms. Jackson
I too like this forum and thanks to the brass at the Star for having the coursge to make this sounding board available. I know these posts are reviewed to maintain a level of decorum for all participating, because not all of my submissions have been posted - probably for a good reason too.. The other newscaster's website is quite selective on which stories they are permiting to be commented on; so much so that a clear theme emerges on what they want to censor.
But here in the electronic pages of the Star you may have noted the thumbs and how they are being 'salted' by one or some intending to skew the scoreboard- see cheat. That many opinions over a few hours could indicate a increased level of passion to vote. So don't you'd think there would be some statements to go along with their vote? But that is the reality leading up to an election - every news story becomes a poll
The more people that participate and speak their views, the more we'll understand our community and possible methods to steer it the way the citizens want. I hope our electorate is very vocal in describing what they believe is important in the coming selection of the next government.

Wonderful Opportunity. So..you want the 6 or so regular posters to.. run for office.. put up or shut up? uh huh.. if you want us to shut up, why don't you buy the Star? Now there's a wonderful opportunity for you.

When I read the posts, when there are personal attacks, I cruise right on by. MOST of the posters have a genuine interest in the topic, I have seen some really interesting, knowledgeable debates here in the Star forum. And some bitter personal attacks. No one knows what the other posters story is. Maybe they are terminal and have time to read and post. Maybe that issue reflects personal ideology. Maybe they have specialized knowledge to share. Who knows? You don't.. I don't.. A funny story? I used to work with a woman who came to work, first thing she did was read the Star forum, thumbs me down and gripe about me. When she was diagnosed, and has since passed away. I went to see her, and I said.. I'm Junie Jackson. She grinned at me and said.. I know. You talk just like you write.

All we really know, is that there is a person on the other side of that computer that has feelings, opinions and is entitled to them. They shouldn't be slammed for them. I would really like everyone to post.

This is a wonderful opportunity for at least six of the regular bloggers on here that are constantly decrying their solutions for the legislature.
Please step forward now as the laundry needs changing with career bureaucrats occupying those seats and no further vision forthcoming.

Sorry but how is this news? They simply opened up for nominations, ha ha. I can see running a story when a party selects someone or there is a nomination race but geeze, slow news day or what!
