A potential Yukon Liberal Party candidate has reported a kerfuffle in the way the Yukon Party has dealt with her political intentions.
A potential Yukon Liberal Party candidate has reported a kerfuffle in the way the Yukon Party has dealt with her political intentions.
Jeane Lassen announced her intent to run in the upcoming election with the Liberals recently – but she didn’t expect the push-back that resulted.
Team Yukon will host a pep rally tomorrow evening for athletes heading off to Nuuk, Greenland, for the 2016 Arctic Winter Games.
Lassen, a high-profile former athlete, was on the list of speakers to motivate the athletes at the pep rally.
She was the first Yukon woman to participate in a Summer Olympics, when she went to Beijing in 2008 for weightlifting.
The day she announced her political plans, Lassen was notified by a volunteer that it was “no longer appropriate” for her to speak at the pep rally.
“I understood, of course, that it wasn’t her decision,” Lassen told the Star in an interview this morning.
So, she sought out an answer.
After being juggled around, Lassen finally spoke with Community Services Minister Currie Dixon.
“After chatting with him, the next day I was put back on the list,” she said.
About a week away from the rally, Lassen was told she was no longer on the list for the second time.
“I said, ‘OK, I’ll attend and cheer for the athletes,’” she said, adding that she didn’t seek out an explanation this time.
But Lassen also told her story to CBC North, which broke the story Tuesday.
By 9 p.m., Premier Darrell Pasloski had tweeted that he was personally inviting Lassen to help “pump up” the athletes at the rally.
“Of course, I’m proud to speak to Team Yukon,” Lassen said, adding that the Arctic Winter Games could be the highlight of some athletes’ careers thus far.
But being involved in the rally doesn’t wash away the bitterness of being juggled on and off the list.
“I’m disappointed in the decision in the first place, but it’s their decision,” she said.
“The benefit of sports is community engagement, and seeking a nomination for a political party is just that –being engaged.”
Yukon Liberal Leader Sandy Silver echoed this sentiment.
“We always see political interference. The focus should be on the athletes this week,” Silver said this morning.
At the Liberal Party’s annual general meeting, Silver chastised the Yukon Party for “keeping lists” of people who disagree with the governing party’s decisions.
“Here’s another example of that,” Silver added.
“It’s very interesting that this came from the premier’s office ... What’s the protocol on this?
“Why does his office decide whether a Yukon Olympian gets to speak at a pep rally or not?”
Several calls to the Yukon government cabinet office this morning seeking an explanation went unanswered before the Star’s afternoon press deadline.

Yukon Human Rights is a waste of time. Try to take a case against senior manager in government and they will do nothing.

"Sandy Silver calling down" Good! I'm almost positive you are making that up or spinning it somehow, but I hope not! You might be ok with a bureaucracy that grows and grows eating more tax dollars by the day but I'm not. It's ridiculous that government is growing while our economy shrinks! I mean what is Energy, Mines and Resources doing all day now that almost all of our mines have shut down? Problem is that there are so many government workers now that no one wants to confront the issue and risk losing votes.....if Sandy has cahoons to do so.....good on him!

You know what's even worse is Sandy Silver calling government employees down on everything and trying to blame someone else, when he does not know what he is talking about.

Hmm...a "safe place" with no racist comments, lets strive for that?
Free country as long as we agree to be diplomatic?
Papers and CBC somewhat free of cynical posts which is replaced by community building.
I'll keep doing what balanced people want. No one forces anyone to read Josey Whales posts. And as a Whale I can hold my own in the modern world and at sea.
This is my happy utopia free of dissent and negative cynical feedback. A matriarchal community which lowers testosterone.
I do enjoy what I do big time.
My hobby is being the voice of reason and offending very few people.
I will not be silenced.
It's called freedom of expression with social license to uphold respect for many individuals and groups and to promote their human rights under our charter. I even uphold the rights of wildlife and people's pets.
Why that is so abstract for the other Josey I'll never understand.
Except for the fact that one can not be logical with an illogical person who means well but is out there focusing in a negative way.
Ohh, and Jeanne is a role model Josey Wales.

Hmm...so I guess back to your "safe place" if ya don't dig Josey?
Free country as long as we agree I suppose?
Free of cynical posts? Really you must have been raised with CBC?
I'll keep doing what the "team" permits me too here, do not like/getting tired of Josey? Then do not read. No one has an arrow to your head forcing you to read "Josey"
Where is this happy utopia free of dissent and cynical feedback?
Do you feel some false human right not to be ever offended?
I enjoy what I do, big time.
A hobby it is busting balls/lady-balls of zealots that as you infer..can think/speak for me.
You cannot, nor can I be silenced.
Maybe here granted but out in the real world....nope!
It's called freedom of expression you use it and so do I just for different reasons.
Why that is so abstract for the haters of I...I'll never understand.
except for the fact that one can not be logical with an illogical zealot.
Where might you put yourself on that scale?

I am a little tired of some of Josey Wales posts.
Is he an Albertan? Maybe he should move back to Halifax - or where ever or somewhere. That is what we do when someone irritates us in Yukon, we tell them to go back home.
The odd comment from Josey Wales is good but most posts are so so inappropriate and cynical.
So, Josey, I am not saying you have to go, it's a free country after all but news comments should be free of all that cynicism and blame.

get rid of the voting, Whitehorse Star. on Mar 4, 2016 at 10:23 am
The Whitehorse Star seriously has to get rid of the thumbs up and down feature.
When I last looked late yesterday, there were 15 thumbs up for the Bobby Bitman comment and zero thumbs down. Now there are 65 thumbs down and 30 thumbs up at 10:20 a.m. the next morning.
This goes on all the time with someone over riding the voting and from what I have seen it is always in favour of the Yukon Party and mining.
Just get rid of it.

She is not even a candidate yet! She has expressed an interest in running for the nomination in a riding, that's it.
This is a speech from an Olympic athlete to young Yukon athletes but the Yukon Party can't stand ANYONE who they feel defies them, as apparently Jeane did by expressing an interest in running for politics.
I take it from the Yukon Party's stance that not one of our current YP MLA's will be seen talking at ANYTHING, since for all we know they might run in the next election.
What a pack of jackals. This is why I want the Yukon Party OUT!

She may be a great fit for the liberal party.
She is certainly strong enough to lift even the biggest pile of PC gibberish the federal drama teacher could regurgitate.
You think things are great now folks Harper sans?

sigh...again.

Jeanne is a role model and her talk would convey messages totally unrelated to politics. She had no intention of using her talk for political gain.
This has taken something away from our athletes and its unfortunate this has happened,

The Libs are putting together a half decent team and seem to be trying to take the high road so they shouldn't blow it by going on about petty things. Leave the howling about the most frivolous of things to the NDP.

This type of petty behaviour is so disappointing in our leaders. Jeanne is an Olympian first and foremost. That's why she was originally invited. She has experience and a message to share with our team. This isn't about politics and she did nothing wrong. It's about inspiring the kids and the team with hope. And the Yukon Party should have done what was best for our team rather than for themselves.

Another Liberal.... AKA Wilf
Here's Wilf spouting off about candidates actions, when in the civic election he sent a blanket e-mail to many, many YG employees at their workplace no less, asking them to vote for him. A friend who works for YG showed me the e-mail.

"“It’s very interesting that this came from the premier’s office ... What’s the protocol on this? Why does his office decide whether a Yukon Olympian gets to speak at a pep rally or not?”"
Exactly true. It definitely looks like political interference.
If a "potential ... candidate" doesn't speak about politics at a sports rally they are eminently qualified to address, then there shouldn't be any problem, and the government is wrong to meddle.

Yukon Party- you're their friends ( and you get appointed jobs) or their enemies on their black list, no in between- party policies..The Liberals are very collaborative and choose to hear and respect everyone's opinion. Even though they may not agree with your opinions they still show respect.

This is standard practice of not having political candidates at functions like this when they plan to run for office. Liberal leader support anything goes politics and some liberals don't follow the election acts and policies. Look at what the City of Whitehorse Mayor did!
