A 16-year-old Whitehorse youth died Monday after the snowmachine he was driving collided with a van on the Takhini Hot Springs Road.

Trent Chartrand succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Whitehorse General Hospital with blunt force injuries to his head, coroner Sharon Hanley said this morning.

In a statement, Whitehorse RCMP said the snowmachine collided with a 2001 Ford Club van when the driver attempted to cross the road in front of the vehicle.

Police were called to the scene at 1 p.m.

There, officers and a passerby performed CPR until an ambulance showed up and rushed Chartrand to hospital.

Sgt. Roger Lockwood said this morning neither alcohol and drugs nor the speed of the vehicles are believed to be a factor, though the investigation into the collision is ongoing.

No charges are expected to be laid, Lockwood said.

Chartrand was wearing a helmet at the time, Lockwood added.

No autopsy has been ordered, Hanley said.
