A young Whitehorse basketball player is in critical condition today after falling from a balcony during a trip to Edmonton.

Brendan Matheson was in Edmonton with the other members of the Yukon's Western Canada Summer Game's men's basketball team for a pre-games tournament, Tim Brady, the coach and Basketball Yukon president, said today.

The 15-year-old basketball player fell from a fourth-floor balcony last Thursday and sustained "serious injuries”, Brady said. He is now in hospital.

Brady, who was not in Edmonton when the incident occurred, said he did not know the details of how Matheson was hurt. The boy's parents are in Edmonton with him today, Brady said.

A prayer vigil was held at the United Church in Whitehorse today.

"We're praying for him and his family,” Brady said.

Matheson also plays bantam hockey with the Mustangs and Dave's Cleaning.

He is originally from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
