WEATHER PLAYS HAVOC WITH HIGHWAY – An extreme north wind weather event affected the South Klondike Highway Sunday night, leaving avalanche debris on the highway. Crews are busy assessing the slopes above, and clearing the highway. The highway will remain closed until it’s safe for traffic to travel. More inclement weather is expected this week on the South Klondike Highway as well as warmer temperatures, which may cause snow and rock slides to affect the highway, particularly in the north end from Kilometres 85-80, where there is a much higher-than-average amount of snow above the highway. A large avalanche closed the Klondike Highway Sunday night, and it remained closed early this afternoon.

Communications analyst Oshea Jephson of the Department of Highways and Public Works said late this morning there was still no word on when the highway is expected to open.

“It was a substantial avalanche,” he said. “And the South Klondike remains closed now.”

The highway closure stranded a group of young skiers who were attending the annual ski camp hosted by Yukon Heliski at Fraser.

Jephson said there is a section of the highway where the snow is measuring eight feet high.

The kids are scheduled to be flown out this evening from where they are staying at a ski camp.

Pete Wright, owner of Yukon Heliski, said in an interview Monday there is no emergency. The students are doing just fine – in fact, they would like to stay at the ski camp for another night, he said.

Horizon Helicopters is donating the helicopter to fly the students to just outside Carcross.

A handful of instructors were also at the weekend camp.

Not sure which site I read yesterday but it had one Cole as owner of Heliksi, of course can't find it now. I do apologize . And my comment was not to be rude towards either owner.

Mr Hodinski owns Horizon but I don’t think he is an owner of Yukon Heliski. I believe that is Peter Wright.

Mr. Hodinski owns Horizon too, not sure if the word donated is the best to use....maybe a write off of some sort. Glad the kids are still having fun.
