A off-work lunch date with his wife soon turned into work for one local RCMP officer on Friday.

The off-duty officer and his wife were having lunch when the woman's purse was taken off the table by a couple of 16-year-old youths, Whitehorse RCMP Const. Christine Grant said this morning.

The two young men took the purse and ran with the off-duty officer chasing them down. He managed to catch up to them and restrain them just outside the RCMP detachment on Fourth Avenue.

Staff inside the building saw what was happening outside and had two officers head outside.

The matter is still under investigation and no charges have been laid yet, Grant said.

Neither the couple nor the business was identified.

Sounds like a good story for our great grandchildren to read on our social "trickle down" decay.

Sounds like a good story for 'Canada's Dumbest Criminals'.
