YG, medical association reach agreement
The territorial government and the Yukon Medical Association (YMA) have reached a new three-year agreement for services covering the period from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.
The territorial government and the Yukon Medical Association (YMA) have reached a new three-year agreement for services covering the period from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.
The pact includes incentives for physicians to take on more patients.
The accord is expected to increase equity and access to health services, promote a culture of continuous improvement and support the development of primary care teams, the government said Thursday.
Highlights include:
-
a new Attachment and Attraction program that will work to increase Yukoners’ access to primary and specialty care, while supporting physicians’ operating costs;
-
the creation of an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Learning Program and a commitment to help end systemic racism and discrimination in the Yukon’s health care system; and
-
a commitment to work with Yukon First Nations, health system partners and providers to support collaborative maternity and early years care.
“This agreement will support a strong and healthy community of primary health care providers, increasing Yukoners’ access to primary health care services,” the government said.
“The Government of Yukon is committed to continuing to work with the Yukon Medical Association to implement the agreement and support the territory’s health care system.”
Dr. Ryan Warshawski, the YMA’s president, said “a robust and well-functioning health care system is integral to the health of Yukoners.
“The Yukon Medical Association is optimistic that this new agreement will promote access to primary, specialty, and hospital-based care,” Warshawski said.
“It has dedicated funding to promote equity and diversity at the individual, office, and organizational level.
“I believe that this will make Yukon one of the most competitive and desirable places to practice medicine in Canada.”
YMA members ratified the agreement last Friday.
“The agreement recognizes both the unique and integral role of physicians in both health care delivery and leadership,” Warshawski said.
“The Yukon Medical Association is committed to working with the Yukon government as a partner in health care moving forwards.”
The YMA is an association of the Yukon’s medical doctors whose role is to advocate for its members, promote the highest level of professionalism in medical practice and promote accessible and quality health care for Yukoners.
“This new agreement with the Yukon Medical Association will work to increase Yukoners’ access to primary care while supporting dedicated health care providers,” said Health and Social Services Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee.
“The Yukon Medical Association is an integral partner in providing health services to Yukoners. I look forward to our work together to continue to improve the experience of patients and providers by addressing problematic, systemic challenges and building an innovative, collaborative health care system.”
The memorandum of under-standing with the YMA has historically governed the fee-for-service model of care, relationship management between the association and the government, and benefit programs that support YMA members.

Remember when the YMC resigned because they wanted to prevent more doctors from coming to the Yukon? Remember when the Liberals and the NDP supported them?

Another rather strong pronouncement of the imminent death of our medical system, about which Canadians have finally weaned themselves of chanting “it’s the best in the world.” That chant was getting to be less sufferable than my last visit to ER.

Yes, that’s at the top of every patient’s priority list: that Yukon should be the most desirable place to practice medicine. Try a little triage, a**holes.

Hmmm. More money for doctors. This time to offset their operating costs. Wonder if this will attract any new doctors (as claimed), or simply stuff more money into the pockets of the existing YMA doctors. I am inclined to think the latter is the real intent.
Equity and inclusion. Reconciliation. How can the Yukon health care system be "systematically racist" when First Nations consume a disproportionate share of health care resources?
Warshawski and McPhee seem to be singing from the same song sheet. I thought Warshawski was supposed to represent Yukon doctors, not Government of Yukon? Why do they use the same talking points?

Is anyone else sick and tired of McPhee just constantly running her mouth about something she knows nothing about? Her Education is not in medicine, or in negotiations. As for the Medical Association. They are just paying lip service.
They already do everything 100% of what they can do. A new Attachment and Attraction program that will work to increase Yukoners’ access to primary and specialty care, while supporting physicians’ operating costs;' What does this even mean? Hiring more doctors? or bringing in Nurses working in advanced practice roles – the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and nurse practitioner? OK..(Can they be sued for misdiagnoses? resulting in death? or impairment?) Does this mean poly clinics? (OMG, no..no..no)
The creation of an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Learning Program and a commitment to help end systemic racism and discrimination in the Yukon’s health care system; and FN racism? I have sat in emerge watching every FN coming in the door, going in to see help before I do. You'd think with a little racism, i might get to go in. I m even sitting in the red chair. FN already get a FN preferred menu at the hospital, around the clock FN Negotiators. I really want some examples of racism perpetrated against FN I was in the hospital for 10 days, a FN lady rang the bell every 10 min. and a nurse was there every 10 minutes. Give me examples. (There is always going to be people who don't like other people because of race, religion, skin colors, size..its never ending..but everyone? every...single...person.. (Except FN)..i don't think so.
A commitment to work with Yukon First Nations, health system partners and providers to support collaborative maternity and early years care. I do like a commitment to the early care years, for every child. But, this should include day cares and kindergarten, 1st grade teachers.. target and get help for troubled children. Maybe we wont have violent, addicted, welfare adults.
