The Yukon government is donating $50,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and neighbouring countries in response to Russia’s attack on the democratic nation.
The Yukon government is donating $50,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and neighbouring countries in response to Russia’s attack on the democratic nation.
“The hearts and minds of Yukoners are with the people of Ukraine as they face the turmoil of having their home invaded by Russian forces,” Premier Sandy Silver said Tuesday.
“Our government stands in solidarity with Ukrainians around the world. We thank the Canadian Red Cross, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement for providing much needed support during this crisis.”
Donations will support the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s work to provide relief through health facilities and supporting families in the region.
Support is needed for the humanitarian and refugee response, including co-ordination for moving people to areas where they can receive food, clothing, shelter, psycho-social support and other assistance.
As a symbol of solidarity, the Ukrainian flag will fly full-mast at the Yukon Government Main Administration Building until Friday.
The Canadian Red Cross is a trusted partner by Canadian governments with deep and long-standing relations with the international Red Cross movement.
Yukoners who would like to contribute to the Ukraine humanitarian crisis are encouraged to donate to the Canadian Red Cross.
The Northwest Territories will match donations of residents to the Canadian Red Cross up to a total of $50,000, while B.C. donated $1 million to the Canadian Red Cross. Alberta plans to donate $1 million toward humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine, while Ontario will provide $300,000 to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.
Mayor Laura Cabott said Monday Whitehorse residents stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
In a statement at the beginning of that evening’s council meeting, Cabott noted the city raised the Ukraine flag earlier Monday as a sign of that solidarity.
“The City of Whitehorse’s support at this point may be symbolic, but it is important to stand up for democracy and peace and against hatred and violence,” Cabott said.
“We stand with the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Canadians in our community, and we hope for a swift end to this unprovoked attack.”
Cabott said Whitehorse stands with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in calling on Russia to end all hostile actions against Ukraine and to leave immediately.
The city believes in peace and respect for the neighbours of sovereign nations, she added, and “thus demand an immediate stop to the Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
She concluded her statement by thanking Roman Hermak and Shelley Williamson of the local Ukrainian community for lending the city the Ukrainian flag that’s flying at city hall.

@history is hard - you do know that the Ukraine's democratically elected leader is Jewish ? Do you have any education at all about what it means to be a Nazi? Perhaps you should take a couple of hours to research the Nazi regime. There's an old saying that it's better to remain silent and have people think you are a fool than to open your mouth and convince them of it.

@History is Hard - you have been watching too much Fox News. The Trump MAGA crowd at Fox have always loved Putin because he exemplifies the strongman dictator persona that they love. The trucker convoy, Trump, Putin, and unfortunately a large part of the conservative party (like Candace Bergen and Pierre Poilievre) now, are also all part of the same big mixing pot. We can only hope that the local conservative party (Yukon Party) does not become part of that craziness as well. It's clear that you have already drank the kool-aid unfortunately.

@History is hard - I hope that in real life you have enough sense to not speak that agitprop nonsense in front of those of us with Ukrainian heritage.

Bonanzajoe thank you for the laugh. I needed it this friday. Now I know you stand with separatists, the ult right, nationalists and right wing fanatics. Sprinkle in a few misguided truckers who have been duped by the above group who has no clue the US says who can enter their country not the Canadian government.

I said pardon on Mar 3. I totally agree with you. I stopped giving to the Red Cross about 20 years ago, when I discovered their egregious anti-semitic nature.

And so the grift begins. Not a single cent of this money given to the Red Cross will actually make it to Ukraine. Looks like the Red Cross CEO and execs will get their raises this year......

The Mongols conquered Russia in the 1200s. Using that logic, Mongolia has a good claim to take it all back. It wouldn't be invasion, it's a rescue.

Ukraine is being cleansed of Nazis and returned to its citizens. And it’s not a nation unto itself. This is not a Russian invasion; it’s a rescue.

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in calling on Russia to end all hostile actions against Ukraine and to leave immediately." Yeah, Putin is shaking in his combat boots over that order. And how dare that ******* say that after the way he treated peaceful trucker protestors and financial donors the the tyrannical way he did and still does.

Will PM JT bring in hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to Canada as refugees? Don't count on it because they are mostly Christians and Jews. He only allows other religions.
