Now that the territorial election is over, it’s time to put words to action, says the executive director of the Yukon Conservation Society.
Christina Macdonald said in an interview last week the Liberals made substantial promises during the campaign.
They committed to protecting the Peel River watershed in keeping with the recommendation from the Peel land use planning commission.
As well, they committed to a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, among other things, she pointed out.
Macdonald said members of the conservation society and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s Yukon chapter conducted their own door-to-door campaign leading up to last Monday’s election to see what environmental priorities were on Yukoners’ minds.
“What we heard was fracking and the Peel land use plan,” she said.
“Obviously, we are keen to see the Liberals, when they are sworn in, make some public announcements on the good sounds leading up to the election. They were making all the right noises; let’s see them take some action.”
Liberal premier-designate Sandy Silver and his team earned a majority government, with victories in 11 of the 19 ridings.
No date has been announced for the swearing-in ceremony.
In the 50-year history of the conservation society, Macdonald said, the society has worked with political parties of every stripe. It’s ready to work collectively with the Liberals to advance their common goals.
It was exciting to see the Liberals promise to implement a carbon tax that provides Yukoners with an opportunity to be part of the solution, she said.
“They understand that climate change is real, and we need to take action.”
The outgoing Yukon Party built its unsuccessful campaign around the imposition of a carbon tax.
Macdonald noted the commitment to not only uphold the recommendation of the Peel planning commission, but to restart the territory-wide regional land use planning effort.
Regional planning stalled with the Dawson regional plan pending a resolution of the legal battle over the land use plan for the Peel watershed.
The dispute over the Peel land use plan is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada on March 22, 2017.

Wait until YCS and CPAWS find out that it is true that Liberals typically campaign on the left and thankfully govern on the right. Then we'll see the whining really ramp up.
Still not sure why these two groups hate the idea of a park being created in the Peel to offer true protection for the watershed. They should be pushing that and let other industry lobby groups do the work of promoting the for-profit and C02 emitting eco-tourism and big game trophy hunting industries.

We shouldn't have to listen to you complaining about everything then. A perfect time to cut all government grants to ycs and cpaws also

There is nothing wrong with fracking! Most countries including the US are doing it and have been for years. Accept for the lies from private environmental agencies like the Sierra Club - who by the way invests in mining and oil companies in south America and Africa, nothing and I repeat nothing has proven fracking dangerous to the environment. Just lies and more lies.

Canada's GHG emissions which some people believe causes the weather to change, have been stable and decreasing since 2005. There is absolutely no justification for any 'carbon tax', unless it's a tariff on goods from China, the single largest and growing emitter of GHGs.

Pretty amazing stuff. In reality a little bit of everything is good balance.....no economic activity will certainly affect political decisions. These greenies need to learn to find balance.
Another annoying amazing thing is the use of ridiculous ideals by any organization. Parks and wilderness don't do anything for the folks that live in any country. No is nothing happens.....economy is important...just have to allow some things to happen.

Apparently YCS and CPAWS really consider themselves 'Elected' now. It's so thrilling to hear YCS is over the moon about another new useless Liberal tax on Yukoners. This Liberal Yukon carbon tax really brings to mind a saying about P------ yourself, the left might get a nice warm do-goody sensation for a bit but it won't make one iota of difference to the world. It will just be a way for the Liberals to take money away from the working middle class and give it to their special interest group cronies.
