Premier Sandy Silver

Work remains on the agenda, Silver says

Work remains on the agenda, Silver says

By Morris Prokop on October 5, 2022

Sandy Silver is looking to reconnect with his constituents after a lengthy career, but first, he wants to focus on the business at hand.

Speaking to the Star Tuesday afternoon, Silver explained his thought process behind his recent announcement that he’ll be stepping away from politics after his term is up.

“After every election, you think about longevity in politics and so, going from a majority to a minority, you consider those things,” he said

“You start thinking about the team, you start thinking about all the things you want to get accomplished …. I think the dust settles on the minority.

“We signed the Confidence and Supply Agreement (CASA), the economy’s booming, we have the best GDP and economy in Canada, we’re moving forward on amazing legislative changes that have never happened before … ultimately, we are MLAs.

“Being a minister brings you out of your community a lot, being a premier even more … and then COVID comes along, and you really don’t see a lot of your riding.”

He recalled how he gave a graduation speech at Robert Service School.

“I didn’t know the valedictorian. I didn’t know most of the people that were graduating and to me, that’s a gut check, and you need the best people to represent the community and I need to get back to that community and have a better finger on the pulse.”

His 11 years as the MLA for Klondike have been “the best job I’ve ever had, and I think it’s time for somebody else in that riding who has a better connection to that riding currently because 2 1/2, three years of COVID really has separated me a lot from a lot of the leaders in that town.”

Post-politics, he’ll miss the people the most.

“To be in the position in a community … where the most brilliant people in that region, that country … they demand your attention and fill you with the wisdom of their years of experience – there’s no other job on the planet like that … I can call them up and ask for a meeting and they will gladly provide me with their wisdom.”

As for what he wants to be remembered for, Silver responded, “We worked hard. I’ve always led from the side with my ministers. There’s no one person that’s responsible for the success of this government.”

Every minister has worked hard, he added.

“Our decisions weren’t made from a political perspective … being able to make evidence-based decisions … there’s no like-minded people in this party. We challenge each other’s world views. So I’m just really proud of how we’ve governed.”

Two of the accomplishments he’s most proud of are resurrecting the Yukon Forum meetings with First Nations chiefs and having the chiefs accompany he and his ministers to Yukon Days in Ottawa.

For now, Silver said, he’s focusing on the task at hand.

“If you want to piss the gods off, make plans. I have no plans. I’m reconnecting with the good people in my community and that’s about it.

“There’s just so much work from now to then and who knows, that could be in 2025, when the next election happens.

“I’m not really focusing in on after this job yet. I’m focusing in on the mandate letters that have been given out to all my ministers … and making sure these are done in a timely fashion.”

Silver was asked about the Yukon Party’s description of him as a “lame-duck” premier.

“I think it’s hilarious. We have been extremely busy and really, I guess if you’re the leader of the official Opposition, yep, you’re right – I’m not on the ball field, so you didn’t see me there.

“I’m not in Hawaii, so when you cancelled public accounts meetings or don’t go to public accounts meetings, I’m not in Hawaii, so we’ve been working extremely hard,” Silver said.

“We immediately went to Ottawa after the session ended because now people can travel again. We’ve gone and spoken with the prime minister about what’s necessary for the Yukon going forward.”

Silver has also made trips to Calgary, Iceland and Greenland this year, promoting the Yukon.

Silver said they’ll be dealing with many issues in the fall session, which will begin Thursday.

“We’re tackling climate change, we’re working with a lot of different partners to increase housing options to build resilient infrastructure and to expand renewable energy as well … there’s gonna be a number of bills for the fall session … there’ll be a supplementary budget as well that covers spending up to now from the spring. Things like our response to fires and flooding in the summer – things that you couldn’t really prepare for.”

Also set for tabling are a Clean Energy Act and an Animal Protection Act.

As for criticism that the cost of living assistance his party announced last week is inadequate, Silver responded, “Every single budget that we put out is designed to make lives more affordable for Yukoners.

“Whether there’s international conflict that’s creating inflation on the global perspective or again, with the booming economy that we do have, there’s always going to be issues around housing.

“We’ve increased the stock at the same rate the population’s increased, which is a legendary increase in stock but yet, it’s still hard to tap that surface.

“We have problems of a growing mining industry. We have problems of a growing business community and we will always tackle those by making sure we partner with the agencies and the governments that are helping in leadership.

“We’ve done a great job, not only in these inflationary terms, but in the last six years to make sure that we’re making lives more affordable for Yukoners and when we compare with other jurisdictions, there’s no better place to live than Yukon.”

Silver added there have been discussions with the NDP to extend the CASA, set to expire in January 2023.

“The leader of the NDP and I both have had teams together this summer looking at an extension. We haven’t come to any finalization of that yet … we’ve committed to regularly scheduled phone calls and meetings and to keep the conversation going during session but also just focusing in on getting our current CASA to fruition and making sure that we accomplish what we set out to accomplish in that.

“My conversations with Kate (NDP Leader White) have always been very positive and I see a pathway forward to extending that in my opinion but, again, that takes two parties to decide, so I’ll just leave it at that.”

SSilver has badly harmed so many Yukoners by imposing insane covid restrictions, mandating the mass injection of an experimental product on gov workers, which put many people out of work or lost businesses, and predictably resulted in hyperinflation.

It's no wonder the Libs hide the most relevant data from their covid statistics. Such as whether the 'covid deaths' had received the covid jab prior to dying. The hidden data would destroy their political career if it came to light.

@Roy
There is an old expression you may have heard called the Golden Rule: "He who has the gold makes the rules."
Now think for a moment, would the PM in his desire to be seen as a leader saving the nation dictate to the various Premiers to do his bidding at the risk of reductions in transfer payments or something similar to get his way?
Also back in the early days when not much was known about the virus, most leaders bet on the side of caution and adopted the suggested measures to protect their citizens, as they should. That's being responsible like they are supposed to be. They were also responsible to push back on government overreach policies that limited the rights of Canadians.
Politics is the skill of being flexible to achieve the best for your constituents, rather than upholding the party line at any cost. Read Jody Wilson-Raybould's book An Indian in the Cabinet. She tells a very good story about the perils of embracing an ideology and how some leaders misuse their powers.

Hey there Roy on Oct 7, 2022 at 10:49 am:

I get that you have said multiple times in these forums that Liberals suck too but then you go on to defend their “sucky” policies, and “sucky” abuses of the law in their control over the m’asses. I agree with you. But then you go on about conservatives. Your actual beliefs are clear - You are a Liberal Lover in denial in an attempt to Currie favour from the moderates. You are as transparent as a glass of pure, filtered water. You have also demonstrated the same depth of analysis in thoughtfulness as a glass half full.

Trudeau and the Liberals play games with the transfer payments to force its will on the premiers. The Liberals are totalitarian con-persons - Do it or else!

@Yukon Proud

You are 100% correct. The majority of provinces and territories currently have Conservative leaders. They have been like that for years.
So please explain, seeing as how health care is run on a provincial/territorial level, how is it that *every* province put in place vaccine mandates and also lockdowns on society.

For example some of the strictest rules about crossing into provinces were enacted by Conservative premiers.
And all this talk about the vaccines being dangerous and a scam - we also know for a fact that every Conservative premier and Pierre Poli himself are all fully vaccinated. How do you rationalize this?

The hypocrisy and disconnect of the horn honkers is obvious. The fact that they have been evicted from their HQ in Ottawa because they spent their rent money on squirt guns and paper crowns is just hilarious and sad. The Alberta horn honkers are in jail for planning to kill cops. The Yukon horn honkers no longer know what to do with themselves now that, as planned, the restrictions have eased.

All this honking about tyranny and cheering for the downfall of the libs coming from people who willfully are ignoring how the Conservatives leaders were at least as bad and in some cases much worse.

Press thumbs down if you can’t bring yourself to admit that fully vaccinated Conservative politicians also used mandates and lockdowns.

How will you determine customer satisfaction?

Cliff Claven was regarded as a “know-it-all” in the ironic sense… The idiot sense. Are you goofing us?

Your post changes nothing that John wrote. It is the sort of blather that one would expect from a self congratulating Liberal spin narrative of vacuous self promotion - We’re awesome because we collect a welfare check and spend it like drunken sailors on feel good, vote buying schemes in pursuit of a Liberal dystopian narrative of divide and conquer communistic regime in the lead up to the implementation of total social control…

Nothing will be beyond the reach of the post-nationalist state - There will be no dollar earned that is not tracked, there will be no ownership of property, and there will be no right to free speech or thought, or bodily integrity - A sheep has no right to threaten the integrity of the herd by right of individual over one’s bodily integrity… Welcome to the brave new world… You will be poked, prodded, and controlled for the good of the Sheeples Republic…

Signed,
Dear Leader

@jack on Oct 6: Yeah, we know Yukon lives off transfer payments. But there's no need for that. We have plenty of natural resources to live off. But, the Marxists and FN don't want to take it out. They want to live on handouts. What a terrible shame. I grew up when people used to consider work a proud accomplishment. Now, its being lazy, drinking alcohol, doing deadly drugs and walking around like the walking dead.

You claim you want climate change action, but then you promote tourism to countries that require a copious amount of GHG to get to our location. Who ever wrote the speech you read, should review it prior to you reading it.

Give it up Liberals, your jig is up! The conservative tide is rising across Canada and the western world and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

Look at Europe right now, the UK, Poland, Hungary and now Italy and even Sweden have elected right wing conservative governments. It's only a matter of time before France and Germany fall like dominos as well!

Then here in Canada the only two Liberal bastions left are here in Yukon and Newfoundland. Literally every other province is controlled by conservative governments (aside from BC which is NDP, but I suppose they act more like Liberals). The federal Liberals and Yukon Liberals are only managing to hold on because of NDP support, but time will run out for them as well and then Conservatives will control it all and we can start rolling back all their lofty programs and policies. I can't wait for the Yukon Party to return to power. I look forward to an inquiry into the horrible vaccine mandates as the first order of business!! HONK HONK

@“We have problems of a growing mining industry." Duhhh, I wonder why? The Liberal/NDP government has done everything they can do to shut down mining. Mining was for years, has supported the Yukon financially. Now, these dupes think renewable energy is going to make the Yukon wealthy. Now leave us alone Silver and enjoy your government pensions and free benefits for life, while thousands you and the Libs/NDP made poor to suffer out your tyrannical and useful programs. I just grieve thinking about the next 3 years your Marxist left wing government have to completely destroy us and our beautiful territory. Please go back to Nova Scotia - soon!

@ John

Do you even know what GDP is? Clearly not.

Also the Territorial Formula Financing funding comes from taxpayers. If you work or spend money in Canada including the Yukon you pay into that pot.

The TFF deals with the ‘have not’ jurisdictions in the federation because of things like ‘economies of scale’ an example would be: a hospital for 1 person costs the same as a hospital for 5,000 people.

Yukoners want to be within the federation just like the federation wants the Yukon as a part of the country. Who knows, in 50 or a hundred years the Yukon is a ‘have’ jurisdiction helping support the ‘have nots’

Jesus man, try to educate yourself a bit especially given you’ve benefited from being on the TFF teet yourself.
