A man has been charged after a woman was sexually assaulted in Dawson City last weekend.

On Sunday morning, Dawson RCMP were called to the downtown area to assist a woman who was being sexually assaulted.

Officers arrested 22-year-old Jonathan George Cardinal of Whitehorse. He has been charged with sexual assault.

The alleged victim, a Whitehorse woman, was in the community for the annual Dawson City Music Festival. She was transported to the Dawson City Health Services Centre for treatment and assessment.

Police believe both alcohol and possibly other illegal intoxicating substances contributed to the incident.

Their investigation is continuing.

Cardinal was released from custody on conditions, including a promise to appear in court in Dawson on Aug. 8.

The RCMP remind the public to report sexual assault to the police, a health care professional, or a friend.

Any unwelcome approach or action of a sexual nature is contrary to the Criminal Code.

You can call the RCMP directly at 667-5555 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

A guy rapes a woman in Dawson City, and is set free, then another guys beats a cab driver in Whitehorse, and is still in jail. Can someone explain this to me?
