By Tim Giilck on January 28, 2021

A Whitehorse woman has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the violent death of her domestic partner in April 2017.

Connie Thorn, 52, pleaded guilty to the charge Wednesday when she appeared in Yukon Supreme Court to answer to the charges.

She had originally been charged with second-degree murder, but that charge was withdrawn with the plea agreement.

An agreed statement of facts accompanied the plea.

Thorn, then 48, called 911 at approximately 11:21 p.m. on Apr. 6, 2017 to say she had found Greg Dawson, 45, her domestic partner, dead on the floor of the kitchen in their apartment on Alsek Road in Riverdale.

Thorn told the RCMP at the time that she had waited 20 to 30 minutes to call them after discovering Dawson’s body.

No clear reason was given for the delay, although Thorn said she had gone to her room to drink some cider.

Dawson’s face and hands were extensively covered in dried blood, according to the statement of facts.

The evidence indicated that his body had been dragged into the kitchen from elsewhere in the residence.

An autopsy revealed Dawson had suffered “numerous recent, serious internal and external blunt force trauma injuries to the head and torso.”

A forensic examination of the apartment showed blood stains were present in most of the rooms. They included extensive pooling and splatter marks in the living room and the walls and door of the kitchen.

More blood stains were found on clothing belonging to Thorn and cleaning products. Evidence of an attempted clean-up of the blood stains was also found.

Thorn initially claimed to have been away from the apartment during that day searching for Dawson, who was prone to seizures.

The investigation, however, could find no corroborating evidence of that. As well, the claim was contradicted by other evidence collected and statements from a neighbour.

That person reported hearing an argument in Thorn’s apartment during the day on Apr. 6.

The witness also told police about a “loud banging” around the same time, as well as hearing Thorn “sobbing” in the early afternoon.

At Wednesday’s court hearing, Thorn admitted to causing the injuries to Dawson.

The fatal wound caused a tear in Dawson’s small intestine that caused “almost immediate fatal bleeding.”

She said she was intoxicated at the time, and “lost her self-control using excessive force.”

Thorn was arrested and detained on Oct.16, 2019. She served 339 days of pre-sentencing at that time, and was released on conditions on Sept. 18, 2020.

Thorn was re-arrested on Sept. 20 following a breach of those conditions. She has been detained in custody since.

Thorn will reappear in court on April 19 and 20 for sentencing.

The delay will provide time for some background reports to be filed.

Greg is my uncle, his nickname was Slugo, my grandma’s little brother and she’s also the woman who raised me.
He loved Rolling Stones like the rest of his brothers and Bruce Lee, I remember he would always show and tried to teach me how he would karate kick and he would be like “high five! To the side! Too slow” Always teased his nieces and nephews and show us how to fight like Bruce Lee.

Couples years before this happened, we don’t know who but someone pushed him off some steps on to concrete around the old shelter and we thought we’d lose him then..he wasn’t the same after that, he had seizures, his head was fragile so everyone always kept an eye out for him.
The day before he died, I was with my grandma and his nephew that’s a couple years older than him, we saw him walking on the side of TD bank, I remember my cousin mentioning how he had a little step in his walk and how happy he seemed, figured it was because he had a gf. My gma picked him up and we dropped him off at that house..

I was across Riverdale when my mom and grandma In the middle of the night came to tell me what happened..
Greg was the last brother (and the baby out of the family and she was the second youngest) she had out of 6 brothers that also died in different tragic ways. It’s hard hearing her cry at night about this..

Hello Ring of Fire
I to enjoyed your assessment of the outcome of this tragic event as for claiming she was native was not my intent. I knew Mr. Dawson personally and my point was is how quick the crown settled for manslaughter on a second degree murder. The fact that Mr. Dawson was native I believe is a large part of why the acceptance of this plea deal. It angers me to no end when a native is murdered and the charges are flexible and it shouldn't be so. Everyone has equal rights to live and nobody, no matter what lame excuse like I lost my temper, has the right to take any life no matter what the race of the victim is. At the end of the day a HUMAN BEING HAS HAD HIS LIFE TAKEN FROM HIM.

Whoever says to the guilty, “You are innocent,” will be cursed by peoples and denounced by nations. But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come on them.

Hello Mike -
While I generally agree with your assessment about the state of the Yukon Legal System I have no information from the article to suggest that Connie Thorn is Aboriginal/Indigenous.

However, she is female and this will count in her favour. She likely suffered from mental health, personality, and substance abuse issues. Given the attack by the judicial and executive branches of the government on little j-Justice [strange coupling indeed given the notion of Independence and all] the background report will go to some unqualified Probation Officer with a penchant for personal bias, and a lack of personal insight. It will be written by someone who has basic literacy skills and no assessment skills.

If there is a request for a Psych evaluation the following report will likely talk about the potential for rehabilitation while a Yukon judge will say something along the lines s/he believes there is adequate resources and programming in the Yukon to deal with these issues and if not there should be and therefore this is no fault of the person before the court today.

There may even be a discussion on patriarchy or related theme and how this has limited her life choices and potentials.

The message is clear. If you plan on committing a violent offence make sure you are drunk, then it’s like it never happened!

I just love how this article says nothing about race and the Justice system but merely an account of what happened in what is essentially a tragic story and the trolls online racialize and make First Nation people out to be such terrible people. I for one think that’s sick, and shame on you trolls! The bible teaches forgiveness and acceptance!

Hey JC -
Don’t blame Connie because the Legal system failed to hold her accountable for her previous crimes. And by accountable, I don’t necessarily mean jail. I mean rehabilitation. Certainly there are issues of diminished capacity due to mental health concerns and substance use but that should not mean a lesser degree of responsibility - Quite the opposite. It should mean an increased accountability for your own rehabilitation.

Is it just me? It seems people who murder usually try and cover it up then feel bad for the victim and their family and friends.
Justice Yukon style has made Whitehorse a very safe and charming place to live.

The sad thing is the willingness of the crown to plea bargain to a manslaughter charge when she lied hid the body, has a history of repeatedly beating her spouses and there will be no justice for the life she took and the lives she's destroyed doing so. I'm sorry but something here has to change. The law says there is no justifiable reason except self defense for the taking of a life but here in the Yukon having a rough upbringing and parents who drank qualifies you for 1 free murder rape robbery all because they were drunk. But 1000 bucks says I go get drunk and beat someone to death it'd be 25 years. The double standard here in the Yukon for native crimes versus non native is insane. And the unqualified people we have testifying and justifying this behavior is acceptable only here in the great Yukon Territory.

You'll notice when alcohol is involved the plea bargain on murder always goes to manslaughter. Of course the government having a monopoly on selling alcohol has nothing to do with it. This is the internal sickness.

Well, now let's see. 3 years since the crime, extremely low sentence, 3 for one for time served. The system will probably owe her some time.

Hey Politico...how so two? Do you seriously think "she" will get hard time?
I say she gets time served, maybe a few months at a healing camp.

Gee she made it two days after a court order was read to her & agreed to, so she is EXACTLY like that couple folks so many wish drawn & quartered...I mean a Yukon official was lied to, her intentions in the territory were deceitful and the public was put in danger...sound familiar folks?
I mean besides 90% of the daily court breaches BOLE brings us...a - gasp - court was lied to!

Surprised they scooped her up and caged her actually.

“lost her self-control using excessive force.”

Jeez I bet you some of us would be punished much harder for this excuse under the liberal government than others.
