A 21-year-old Whitehorse woman has been sentenced to time served plus two years' probation for the 2009 stabbing of her mother.
Michelle Blanchard was charged with assault with a weapon, after stabbing Frieda Brown in the chest on July 23, 2009, nearly puncturing her lung, while the two were drinking.
Blanchard also faced four charges of breaching the terms of her release and one for fraudulent personation, resulting from a failure to report and failing to remain in the Yukon in March 2010, failing to abstain from alcohol in November, and giving a false name to RCMP officers after she was pulled over.
Blanchard has no previous criminal record, but suffers from "a significant substance abuse problem,” territorial court Judge Karen Ruddy said in her decision, made public this week.
Since her arrest, the judge stated, Blanchard has made several positive lifestyle changes as part of the territory's Wellness Court.
"There appears to be a real change in her level of commitment, and that she is looking forward to making those changes in the future,” said Ruddy.
She is now living with her grandparents.
"It is evident to me, from the number of people that have taken the time to be here, that she has a great deal of support from her community and her family, which, certainly it is my hope will be of assistance to her once she is back in the community,” said Ruddy.
Blanchard will have to serve 40 hours of community service and is barred from possessing a weapon for two years.
Blanchard must abide by a curfew, abstain from drugs and alcohol, not attend any establishment that primarily serves alcohol and take a psychological assessment.
She has been ordered not to have contact with Brown until both demonstrate their sobriety and receive permission from Blanchard's probation officer.
