Two people are in hospital and another in jail after a vehicle rolled off the Alaska Highway Monday afternoon.

Whitehorse RCMP headed to the Takhini River Bridge shortly after 4 p.m., after receiving a report that a car had gone off the road just south of the bridge.

En route to the scene, emergency personnel met up with the three occupants of the vehicle, who had been picked up by another driver.

The two passengers, a man and a woman, were both badly injured, police reported today. They were moved into ambulances and taken to Whitehorse General Hospital.

The woman was later medevaced to Edmonton, while the man remains in hospital here. Neither had been wearing a seatbelt and both were ejected from the car when it rolled, according to police.

The driver of the crashed vehicle, a late-model Honda Civic, was taken to hospital by police, where he was treated for minor injuries, then taken back into custody. He was wearing a seatbelt and remained in the car during the rollover.

Investigation of the scene showed the Honda was proceeding north on the Alaska Highway when the driver lost control, crossing over the centre line and rolling several times into the ditch.

The 28-year-old Whitehorse man who was behind the wheel will likely face drunk driving charges, police said.

"This collision serves as a reminder that driving and alcohol do not mix and that seatbelts do save lives,” Sgt. Glenn Ramsay said in a statement.

The Yukon's traffic division will be increasing the number of check stops its officers perform over the holiday season, doing random stops throughout the territory and targeting impaired drivers, police said.

Check stops conducted last weekend resulted in impaired driving charges under the Criminal Code against two drivers and two 24-hour driving suspensions.

Nine drivers were charged under the Motor Vehicles Act and two others were charged with drug-related offences, police reported today.

My heart goes out to Jess and her family and I hope this driver gets a very very harsh punishment.

It's always the same thing people think that they can drink when they are impaired without thinking of the punishment,

but alas this is the Yukon and the driver will just be getting a slap on the wrist and not a charge that he deserves to get!

Well I am sure that the driver will regret driving under the influence even more so once the persons injured in the accident file a law suit, HA! He'll never be able to afford insurance again.

What an idiot.

Also, though I feel bad for those injured in the accident, they should have taken into account the fact that their driver was under the influence and found another ride if possible.

When will people learn?????
