Revised - A 22-year-old woman died in Wednesday’s single-vehicle collision on the North Klondike Highway two kilometres south of Braeburn.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service has identified her as Cassandra Kindness Miller of Whitehorse.
Carmacks RCMP responded to a call about the collision involving a northbound vehicle at kilometre 277 of the highway at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Officers found a four-door sedan on its roof in the middle of the highway, in a gravel area under reconstruction.
Miller, the driver, had died at the scene, police said Thursday.
A 20-year-old female passenger was trapped in the vehicle and was extracted by police and paramedics.
She had suffered serious injuries and was transported to Whitehorse General Hospital, along with another passenger, a 48-year-old man, who sustained minor injuries.
An RCMP collision analyst and the coroner attended the scene.
“Preliminary investigation has determined that the vehicle hit the right shoulder of the road and rolled several times until it came to rest on its roof,” police said.
“The highway was closed for approximately two hours and opened to single-lane traffic until the scene investigation was completed at approximately 1:30 p.m., when the highway was fully re-opened.”
The police statement did not address the use of seatbelts.
The Carmacks RCMP and the coroner’s service are continuing with their investigations.
