A 22-year-old woman died in Wednesday’s single-vehicle collision on the North Klondike Highway in the Braeburn area.

Her name has not been released.

Carmacks RCMP responded to a call about the collision at kilometre 277 of the highway at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers found a four-door sedan on its roof in the middle of the highway, in a gravel area under construction.

The 22-year-old driver had died at the scene, police said Thursday.

A 20-year-old female passenger was trapped in the vehicle and was extracted by police and paramedics.

She had suffered serious injuries and was transported to Whitehorse General Hospital, along with another passenger, a 48-year-old man, who sustained minor injuries.

An RCMP collision analyst and the Yukon coroner attended the scene.

“Preliminary investigation has determined that the vehicle hit the right shoulder of the road and rolled several times until it came to rest on its roof,” police said.

“The highway was closed for approximately two hours and opened to single-lane traffic until the scene investigation was completed at approximately 1:30 p.m., when the highway was fully re-opened.”

The Carmacks RCMP and Yukon Coroner's Service are continuing with their investigations.

Incredibly sad. She was only 22 years old, probably not a ton of experience driving. I hope the others in the car recover soon, and I feel for the friends and family of this young woman.

@Davis
I also went through with a Motorhome and trailer. They have a speed limit posted and it was completely safe at that time. To roll a car several times she had to be flying and as was said went off the shoulder.

rolled several times ?? on Aug 21, 2020 at 12:30 pm

Doesn't make sense. It's a construction zone. No way a car rolled multiple times doing 30km/h.

Why didn’t they call the fire Marshall’s office and activate the SHOT crew?! That’s what they’re for. They’re the only professional auto ex crew in the territory. I feel sorry for the RCMP when the Fire Marshall hears about this.

I would be interested to hear if the road conditions played a part in the crash. I drove this section of highway around the same time and was very surprised by how poor the conditions were. I know it was under construction but even so the ground was so soft and huge ruts everywhere it was not easy to navigate with a truck and I imagine a car would be more difficult. Do construction companies need to provide a certain standard of road condition for safety during construction?
