A Whitehorse woman has a concussion and a fractured femur after a hit and run downtown Monday afternoon.
Jessica Brown, who works as an advertising representative at the Star, was crossing Strickland Street between Front Street and Second Avenue on Monday at about 1:30 p.m. when a car struck her.
“I swear I looked both ways,” said Brown. “I did. There were no cars coming.”
The vehicle knocked her legs out from under her, and she rolled up on the hood. She felt a jolt as the driver pressed the gas pedal, and she rolled off the car onto the side of the road. The car drove away.
“I was in shock,” she said. “It all happened so quick.”
Brown was bleeding from the head and the lip. She went to Whitehorse General Hospital, where she was given crutches and told she had a hairline fracture on her femur and a concussion.
The left side of her body is bruised.
Const. Dean Hoogland said RCMP have no suspects at this time and that there were no witnesses he’s aware of.
“It’s still under investigation,” he said.
Brown didn’t see the licence plate but said the car was a blue Honda Civic with a CKRW The Rush sticker on the back window. It was an older model, perhaps a 1993 or 1994.
RCMP request that anyone with information about the incident contact them at 667-5551.

This incident does not surprise me. More and more ppl are being hit and some killed. The Bylaw and traffic control RCMP unit should monitor the traffic violations more carefully. Such as speeding down 2nd Ave, improper proceeding through crosswalks, failure to signal, etc. Yukon is known for the worst drivers in Canada. Especially dangerous in front of the Courthouse crosswalk. Drivers fail to stop and don't stop as long as they should for pedestrians while they are on the road. The Lights need to be brightened or an Overpass needs to be built.

A very unfortunate stroll Jessica went for in our downtown core, very unfortunate indeed.
Hope she heals well, and said scumbag gets found and convicted of any charges.
Kinda like "Survivor" downtown these days...with so many new morons to add to our old stock.

Not that there is any excuse for the driver leaving the scene, but I can't help but notice that the woman was "crossing Strickland Street between Front Street and Second Avenue". This screams jaywalking, which along with bad drivers in this town, is also a major problem in the downtown core. Perhaps if this person had crossed the street legally at an intersection, she would have been fine.

This criminal will be caught and fully prosecuted, it is too small of a town. If the driver is reading this, you best turn yourself in before the police catch you and hope for leniency because you fessed up...
