ESSENTIAL TO THE COMMUNITY – The Share the Spirit program helps more than 200 families and 400-plus children every year, says Val Graham, president of the Kin Club.

‘With two members, we cannot pull off the program’

The Kin Club needs another local organization to take over its Share the Spirit program, which provides assistance for families at Christmas, says the club president.

Val Graham said with two of its four club members leaving the territory, and with more than 15 years organizing the annual food and toy drive, it’s time to hand off the program.

The club will be sending out letters in the next day or two to other local non-profit organizations and church groups to see if they can find somebody who wants to take it over, she told the Star.

“We provide food hampers and toys to children and families in need, and we do over 200 families and over 400 children every year,” Graham said.

“They basically get a hamper with all the goodies for a Christmas dinner ... everything you want for a turkey dinner.”

Graham said in addition to looking for a new organization to take over Share the Spirit, they’re also looking for a new location where they prepare the family packages for delivery the week before.

For the last four or five years, she pointed out, the Kin Club was using the old public library at the Yukon government’s main administration building, but they received word Wednesday it will not be available this year.

Every year, Graham said, letters are sent out to local businesses which include sponsorship and volunteer forums. The Kin Club also receives personal cash donations.

The club contacts local agencies that provide services to families in need, such as Kaushee’s Place, Health and Social Services and Family and Children Services.

The agencies are asked to identify families – with the permission of the families – who would benefit from Share the Spirit, she explained.

A confidential and anonymous family profile is created, including a wish list from the children.

Individuals or businesses sponsoring a family are responsible for shopping for the kids and wrapping the presents.

Where there is no sponsor, the Kin Club and volunteers do the work using the donations of cash, food and toys.

The old library provided ample room as a staging area – it even had one room designated specifically for wrapping – but in years past, the Kin Club has had larger locations but smaller ones as well, Graham said.

She said a team of anywhere from 30 to 50 volunteers put together the food hampers and wrap the toys. The family packages are delivered several days before Christmas.

The year’s delivery has been scheduled for Dec. 17.

“There’s a lot of people that come out every year with big trucks to help us out,” she said.

“With two members, we cannot pull off the program,” Graham added.

“So we need another organization to come in and we will train them and teach them what we know so they can take over from us.”

Grahams said the Kin Club is also a supporter of the Yukon chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

Up until this year, it organized a school program where they would provide school backpacks with supplies for families who needed the assistance.

The Yukon government announced earlier this year it will provide $100 for each student in the territory to purchase school supplies.

Hey June, yes I have watched the decay of a opportunity to put in ones feedback across the Canadian, American and yes even the Uk media.
Whilst those mediums have long ago forgot their role to be played in a democracy, lean so so left they fell over in the late 80's.
I find it redifining ironic, as the self proclaimed tolerance crews...are completely intolerant of any spore of criticism.
Folks may not believe me, but my online presence is but a wee fraction of what I do. Since I loathe socialist moderation online feedback gets, I go front lines and face the source.
The nobles warming their chairs know this, M very much knows it, the many SJW's are figuring this out, the local criminal scum...yup many of them even know it.
I have heaps going on in my world currently and will throttle back online, ramp up in person visits and as stated loathe "moderation" as it currently is manipulated...will most likely have my own medium next summer.
Ass pain I am to the zealots, proudly so.
...and I feel I am just getting started.

I feel for these girls that have worked so hard for years and tried to foster change.

But one thing that is always obvious unfortunately is that these unemployed and sometimes under motivated will never join an organization like this and try and help with the work load. That my friends says something.

Obviously people who complain about charities have had it too good all their lives and do not know what it is like to struggle. We are Canadians and last time I checked Canadians were one of the best supporters of charities. So "really tired of it" get off your duff and instead of complaining about the charities why don't you help out. You probably do not know what it is like to go without a meal also you are probably paid to much for the work you do.

Josey..I for one would miss your creatively expressed insights.
You are unique in your approach and always get your point across. And some of your analogies are truly entertaining!

I don't pay attention to thumbs up/down. I worked with a woman who commented every day on June's posts.. hated me. Got so she didn't even read what was written anymore, but thumbs down it as soon as she saw my name.

The best I hope for is that if I post, others will post. No matter what side of the fence they are on. Too many times have I read something and thought..That person is so right, their comment presented so well, that I end up changing my side of the fence. Many thoughtful posters on here that give substance to things others feel.

As for the Star editing..well.. the Star might be the last paper standing that allows everyone's opinion...even if they judiciously edit.. (some of mine don't make it to print even with an edit.. mostly when I am up at 3 a.m. and decide to get crappy about something. Have you noticed CBC's forums are almost all gone now, and their editors are merciless for those few articles that are open to comment, same with CTV. We are pretty lucky that the Star is so non partisan in the posts they allow. Yeah.. keep "pissin' in the wind".

My suggestion is to team up with an organization which has people who can help out.
Think out of the box perhaps even ask Raven recycling. You are doing good but with turnover and burnout volunteer activities are always a struggle.

Stay and keep swinging the hammer OJW as per section 2(b) of the Charter. Ya just need to be a bit more crafty in this day and age.

Hey folks if my comments as of late seem like gibberish, more than regular...thank the moderator.
Once you remove a few choice words all context is lost, point very nerf like etc.
Survey ...thumbs up if I should still piss in the wind here, thumbs down if I should go away and get my own channel.

I admire the tireless selfless time volunteers put into the toil, really I do.
That said, there sure seems to be a full assault on all things western in the last few.

Don't get tired of the ask! Get tired of the need. If Charities don't ask they will never receive a thing. Good news that so many Charities are still working so hard to get things for so many people. The staff work so hard especially at this time of year. Even if you can give a few dollars or some of your time. Anonymously or at a big event, most Charities deserve every penny. Pick one that works for you. There are over 130 in the Yukon alone that can give you a tax receipt for your cash donation, and many more non-profit societies that deserve your dollars and effort. A big thank you to all those who continue to ask.

The bad news is, I think people are tapped out already, and the donation season is just starting, winding up at Christmas and then on again at Rendezvous.

Some of the people I know are trying to give a little bit to everyone, buying that ticket from the old ladies in the grocery store, buying cookies from the little cherubs at the door.. I am alone, yet I got sucked into buying 30 lbs of vegetables from the cutest little second grader ever...

I only have a small amount now to contribute...how do i choose where that small amount goes? All these people, all these organizations are worthy. They are earnestly working to provide for their communities where the social net short falls. It hurts my heart that any child in my community might not have a toy at Christmas. That a family might have to go to Sally Ann for a turkey dinner. It irritates me that someone sitting in jail is going to eat better than a family who depended on Kin for supper.. and Kin has to disband.

I sure hope some group steps forward to assume this duty. I don't need a helping hand this year.. but who knows about next year?
