Winter settles in with a vengeance

It's not a record-breaking year for November snowfall, but it's close, and we're only half way through the month.
November tends to be the snowiest month of the year for the Yukon, but this month has seen some of the most snow on record.
So far, we have had 45 cm of snow, 38 cm in the last two weeks.
In the next 24 to 36 hours, we could have up to five cm more.
"We are way above normal,” Doug Lundquist, sector specialist with the Environment Canada weather service based in Kelowna, B.C., said today.
The snowy weather is coming from the Arctic Circle on its way to British Columbia.
"We have had a series of low pressure systems coming from the northern Gulf of Alaska which has been dumping snow on the Yukon,” said Lundquist.
And as the snow piles up, we're getting closer to record-breaking levels.
"We are on track to be in the top five,” said Lundquist.
"It's not impossible to break the record at this point. The month is only half over, and we're almost certainly in the top five and maybe in the top three.”
The most snow to ever fall on the Yukon in November was in 1978, with 69 cm. We nearly broke that record last November, with a snowfall of 68.7 cm.
Third place goes to November 1991, which saw 55 cm of the white stuff blanket the territory.
November 1944 saw 52 cm, November 1994 witnessed 51 cm and November 2006 saw 45 cm of snow fall.
As we join the top ranks, we'll also get much cooler.
"There will be an increase of Arctic air filling the vacuum left over from systems moving south,” said Lundquist. "That's going to bring deepening Arctic air flows with lows approaching negative 30.”
There is some good news though.
Next week will offer a short reprieve from the snowfall as warmer air flows come in off the Pacific Ocean, said Lundquist.
Those will pass by the Nov. 26-27 weekend, however, with even more snow expected toward the end of the month.
