Wildfire preparedness questioned

With summer around the corner, some council members are wondering how Whitehorse is preparing for wildfire season.
“Given that there are latent fires still being worked on in B.C. and N.W.T., I was wondering if administration has an update for us on how we’re feeling about this fire season, and how we’re jumping on it,” Coun. Kirk Cameron said Monday.
City manager Jeff O’Farrell said there are no updates yet. The city is waiting to hear from agency partners on the seasonal forecast, which is not expected until well into April.
In the meantime, area residents should sign up for the Whitehorse Alert service, said Coun. Mellisa Murray, chair of the Public Health and Safety Committee.
“I think it is top of mind, given that we will soon have warmer temperatures and there is less snow about,” she said.
The Whitehorse Alert mass notification system quickly communicates time-sensitive information about events like fires, evacuation orders, road transportation emergencies or earthquakes.
