Yukon Wildland Fire Management crews were back on site this morning dealing with a blaze which broke out Thursday just 2 1/2 kilometres from the Moose Creek Lodge in the Mayo fire district.

Crews responded immediately to the lightning-sparked fire when it was discovered Thursday afternoon, officials said today.

Both airtanker groups and a helicopter were deployed as part of the effort.

"With the Moose Creek Lodge located approximately 2.5 kilometres from the fire, we took immediate action as soon as it was reported,” said duty officer Lorne Harris.

"Fortunately, fire personnel were able to keep the fire to 1.5 hectares and prevent it from moving any closer to the lodge.”

This morning, crews and a helicopter continued their efforts on the fire, which is about 52 kilometres southwest of Mayo.

A second wildfire discovered Thursday was also lightning-caused.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the small 0.1-hectare fire near Lake Laberge after it was reported at around 9:30 a.m.

Air patrols were also conducted through much of the territory Thursday after Wednesday night's storm saw more than 5,000 lightning strikes recorded.

More lightning is forecast with hot and dry conditions expected over the next few days, and the public is asked to be responsible when having a campfire.

Wildland Fire Management is also reminding people that burning permits are required for any backyard burning or brush burning in the territory. Permits are always suspended when the danger rating is moderate, high or extreme.

So far, there have been 137 wildfires in the territory this season, burning nearly 200,000 hectares of forest.

The public is again asked to report any wildfires to 1-888-798-3473.
