Edwin and Laura Vanderkley are the Yukon’s latest million-dollar lottery winners.

The Whitehorse couple won a $1-million MAXMILLIONS prize in the July 13 LOTTO MAX draw, the Western Canada Lottery Corp. (WCLC) said Thursday.

Edwin bought the couple’s $11 quick pick ticket from the Porter Creek Super A store.

A few days after the draw, Laura read in the Star that a million-dollar winning ticket had been sold in the city.

“I emailed the winning numbers to Edwin so he could check the tickets,” she said in a statement.

“He emailed me back that our numbers had matched. We were both in disbelief!”

The couple wanted more proof that they had actually won.

Laura downloaded the WCLC lottery manager app on her smartphone and used it to scan the ticket.

They also stopped in at another lottery retailer to double-check the win through the lottery terminal.

The happy couple said they plan to use their windfall to pay some bills. They’re also thinking of buying a vacation property somewhere with a warm climate.

The two matched all seven numbers of one of the 21 draws for MAXMILLIONS prizes.

Their winning numbers were 8, 9, 16, 17, 19, 36 and 42.
