Whitehorse city council has been asked to authorize the use of the coat of arms as well as the flag for a colouring book being produced by Biosfaeren Design of Victoria.

As Jeff O’Farrell, the city’s manager of legislative services, reported to council Monday night:

“Biosfaeren Design is creating a heraldry colouring book for children. The plan is to include black and white outlines of the flag and coat of arms of each province and territory and their capital cities, complete with text describing and explaining the elements within the images.”

The city’s coat of arms, adopted in 2002, features the Our People Our Strength motto.

The image above it showcases both a railway and highway surrounded by trees and mountains, a shield with the image of a paddle-wheeler.

On one side stands a white horse, while on the other is what’s described as a wolf-raven.

Over the shield is a crown and mantling in the colours of the northern lights, with a locomotive wheel rising out of that.

The Whitehorse flag, meanwhile, features a circle against a blue background.

Inside the circle are images of a sternwheeler, white horse and mountains with a helicopter overhead.

The outline of the circle features the words “The City Of Whitehorse” and the year 1950, the year Whitehorse became an incorporated community.

Three years later, it was named the Yukon’s capital, succeeding Dawson City.

No one on council spoke out against allowing the coat of arms and flag to be used in the colouring book.

Coun. Jocelyn Curteanu, however, wondered whether the city would be involved in ensuring information presented in the book about Whitehorse is accurate before it’s printed.

O’Farrell confirmed there’s a written narrative that goes along with the coat of arms that will be provided with the authorization to use it and the flag in the book.

Questioned by Coun. Samson Hartland, O’Farrell said it’s not clear what other municipalities have agreed to allow the use of the coat of arms and flags.

Hartland noted it would be good for the city to receive a few copies of the book once it’s printed if council agrees to permit the use of the coat of arms and flag.

Council will vote next week on whether to authorize the use of the city symbols.

The book would be sold at a profit through a number of retailers as well as online through amazon.ca

Coun. Dan Boyd was absent from Monday’s meeting.

Perhaps it's time for Dawson City to again bear the burden of being the capital. Or maybe another community. The good part of being the Yukon's capital is all the money you get from Ottawa but the negative is that you have to sell your soul for it.
