Three new wildfires were reported in the territory Tuesday, with the most notable being a spot-size human caused fire in the Whitehorse district near the riding stables at Whistle Bend.

Firefighters with the City of Whitehorse and Yukon Wildland Fire Management responded quickly, and the fire was extinguished.

"This is another needless, human-caused fire that had the potential to become a much more serious situation,” duty officer Lorne Harris said today.

"Fortunately, it was reported quickly and was able to be kept to a small size, but this recent string of human-caused fires is a concern and needs to stop.”

Tuesday's fire in Whitehorse was the third people-caused fire in the district in the past four days.

On Monday, firefighters were called to a human-caused fire near Cousins airstrip in north Whitehorse.

Last Saturday morning, firefighters responded to a human-caused start at Lake Laberge

Fire officials are reminding the public to make sure any fires they light are properly extinguished and cold to touch.

The other two new fires reported Tuesday are located in the Watson Lake district in a remote area near Gusty Lakes. Located approximately 145 kilometres northeast of Watson Lake, both fires were started by lightning and are an estimated two hectares in size.

No values are currently at risk.

Meanwhile, suppression efforts continue today in the Carmacks district on the fire burning near the Little Salmon River.

The 1,600-hectare remains active but crews continue to make good progress on the southern portion of the fire.

Fire officials are also continuing to closely monitor a blaze an estimated 7,000 hectares in size in the Carmacks district near Mandanna Lake

The priority is the protection of the community and all other identified values and to conduct suppression on the fire if it were to cross the Yukon River.

It remains a safe distance from the community; however, smoky conditions can be expected

With Tuesday's new activity, there have now been 120 fires in the territory burning approximately 108,500 hectares.
