‘What a night to be a Liberal’

The Liberal Party painted the country red Monday,

By Aimee O'Connor on October 20, 2015

The Liberal Party painted the country red Monday, and it carried all the way to Whitehorse’s MacBride Museum, where a large crowd of party followers awaited the man of the hour – the newly elected Member of Parliament for Yukon, Larry Bagnell.

While the national results came pouring in, the Liberals were scooping up seats in the House of Commons at about the same rate that the museum was filling up with giddy supporters, clad in red garb and buttons that read, “Larry works for me.”

When the first three Yukon polls were tallied, NDP candidate Melissa Atkinson was positioned at the top, with more than 50 per cent of the votes.

“We were a little frightened when those first polls came in,” said Rod Taylor, a recently announced candidate for the Yukon Liberal Party.

“Clearly, it was going to come down to the votes between him and Melissa.”

By the time the next round of polls came in, Bagnell had pushed to the front of the pack, with Conservative candidate Ryan Leef behind him, followed by Atkinson and Green candidate Frank de Jong.

“Tonight is the night for strategic voting,” a Liberal party faithful said, raising a wine glass for other supporters to clink.

The room erupted in exuberant cheers and whistles when the Liberals had secured 170 seats – the threshold for a majority government to be formed.

A card that read “Prime Minister” stapled onto a poster of Justin Trudeau had officially become a reality.

As the Yukon’s polls slowly trickled in, the crowd tensely studied the white board which was being updated as the numbers came in.

While the happy crowd made it appear obvious that Bagnell would keep his lead, it wasn’t secure until Richard Mostyn, the Yukon Liberal Party’s vice-president, took the microphone and announced, “Larry Bagnell is the new Yukon MP.”

“What a night to be a Liberal, what a night to be Canadian,” Taylor told the crowd.

The bouncy music of The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)” got the crowd clapping to the beat, stomping their feet and chanting, “Lar-ry! Lar-ry!”

Bagnell’s wife, Melissa, carried their daughter, Aurora, to the front of the room while the veteran politican worked his way through the crowd, with his son, Dawson, perched on his shoulders.

With hands reaching out to be shaken from all directions, Bagnell stopped to thank several people on his way up to the podium.

With Dawson still atop his shoulders, Bagnell started to thank all the people who helped him get to where he is – beginning with his family.

“Melissa was like a single parent for two years. I don’t know how she did it, but ....” Bagnell trailed off, handing a gift to his wife.

“Love you, sweetie,” he said, embracing her as they both started to tear up slightly.

He congratulated the other candidates and thanked everyone who helped out on his campaign. Among those were his campaign manager Patricia Cunning, Brandon Kassbaum, Brad Weston and another volunteer, Alex Gray, who might have been the youngest volunteer to go canvassing with Bagnell.

“I want to be an MP,” Gray told the Star that night.

The first time Gray met Bagnell, his energy and vast experience as an MP inspired him.

“He really deserves this,” Gray beamed.

“This election was dedicated to those who were fearful if we had four more years,” Bagnell said.

“There’s some people (that) didn’t make their first choice tonight, but they made the choice they thought was best for Canada.”

Clad in a navy suit with a tie splattered with bright red maple leafs, Bagnell looked equal parts happy and relieved – later declaring he was “delirious for Canada.”

While talking to reporters, the MP noted that the longer election campaign allowed him to meet more people, but was subsequently exhausting.

“We had 16 debates, probably more than any candidate had in the country,” he said.

Asked when Yukoners can expect to see some of the Liberal Party’s promises acted on, Bagnell said restored funds to departments such as Parks Canada and scientific research centres will come out with the budgets in February.

The promised inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women will hopefully occur “as soon as we get going,” he said.

As for the contentious amendments made to Bill S-6, which deals with environmental assessments of proposed developments, Bagnell had previously noted that the Liberals would repeal the amendments if elected.

“As soon as we can get it to the House, we will,” he assured the group of reporters.

All the other candidates showed up to MacBride to offer congratulations to Bagnell.

“You did this last time, and now it’s my chance to do it,” Leef said, taking Bagnell’s hand and raising it in the air.

Though Bagnell’s feat was celebrated heftily at the venue, it wasn’t necessarily expected at the beginning of the night.

“I thought (the Liberals) would probably get the minority government,” said Ione Christensen, a former Yukon senator and the first woman to be named Commissioner of the Yukon.

“My husband (Art) predicted a Liberal majority, and I said, ‘Oh, it can’t possibly be!’” Christensen laughed.

Because polls had been so close throughout the campaign, she added, it was difficult to predict results with any certainty.

The former politician is confident in Trudeau’s abilities – and Bagnell’s.

“(Trudeau) is a leader ... he had a really strong team of good people around him, and that’s what it takes to run a country.

“Larry works very very hard for everybody. It doesn’t matter whether you voted for him or not; Larry is there. And I think that’s important.”

Bagnell’s campaign manager, Patricia Cunning, noted that there was a moment where they could feel the campaign moving in their favour.

“But, you never know,” she said, adding that in the 2011 election, Bagnell lost to Leef by 132 votes.

“You never feel confident,” Bagnell said. “You always run like you’re one vote behind until the very last minute.”

Others were impressed by Bagnell’s self-deemed “100 per cent positive campaign.”

“The one thing Larry Bagnell did was that he was incredibly respectful for the other candidates,” Taylor said.

“If nothing else, that resonated with people. I hope that’s the way things will be moving forward ... And in the territorial election, too.”

Taylor announced in August that he’d be running for the Yukon Liberal Party in the territorial election next year.

The positive campaign, based on policy and ideas, was simple, Cunning said.

“We just explained to people what we were running on.”

“I’ve known Larry since 1998,” she said, adding that she has worked on each of Bagnell’s campaigns.

“There’s a lot of people in the communities who think I’m Larry’s wife because in the old days, I would go on tour with him to the communities all the time.

“He is the best candidate I’ve ever known.”

For Bagnell’s wife, Melissa, it is a feeling of relief.

“This is his passion, and I really believed that’s where he should be,” she told the Star.

The lyrics to Bagnell’s winning song – “I would walk five hundred miles / And I would walk five hundred more / Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door” – seem to seamlessly fit the man who was voted hardest working MP in Parliament and spent months tirelessly knocking on Yukoners’ doors to wind up re-claiming his seat in Parliament.

“If you are sincere, what you say resonates with people. And that’s Larry to a tee,” Taylor said.

“Nice guys can finish first.”

signs are gone...ya!! on Oct 22, 2015 at 9:59 pm

Besides being tickled that the government has changed over, I am also very happy not to see horrendous blue signs out everywhere. Please, City council, make a bylaw about how many signs can be put up. It caused a national stir and made us the laughing stock when Cary had enough and cut up those signs! Many of us wished those signs would go away. One or two, but not 30 lined on each side of the roundabout down to Whistle Bend. Signs shouldn't be damaged, but fools shouldn't put up hundreds of them and assume that can change a very unpopular vote.

Hey PSG...me too, in regards to holding to account.
I'm enjoying watching everyone pee with excitement, and will remind them where PC, Y.O.A. Indian Act, French pandering a.k.a engineered bi-bilingualism, allowing inmates like Olson voting came from...man I could go on a spell?

In short, this politically correct socially engineered land I used to call Canada..got the government you desire.
The people spoke, even those whom washed ashore 13 months ago did too.
They said...'we want more free stuff and love fictional stories and being lied too"

Then they gave the keys to the country, for the fortunate son to finish his daddies work.
Look forward to seeing goblin costumes and having yet another great flood of folks who absolutely HATE everything about our values..using the PC circus to carry out the Caliphate.
Awesome...thank P.E.T and soon his spawn.

Trudeau is already saying he is going to open the floodgates and have 25,000 Syrians in Canada by January 1st. I hope he is held personally responsible for any wrongdoing or ISIS members that he lets into this country thanks to his little pet project.

No worries Bud, I'll be holding the Libs feet to the fire as much as I did the last government's. We all need to hold every government accountable.

Tell me JC, if you don't think the government should be snooping in your gun cabinet why should they be snooping in my greenhouse? I'd rather they stay out of both.

because the system works - not perfectly but pretty well on Oct 21, 2015 at 12:23 pm

@Jack who said "Why do we have to have the same old worn out recycled career politician as MP? Our Democracy was designed to have people from all walks of life to represent us in Ottawa" etc etc - Larry won a nomination from the local Liberals, and got more votes than the others who put their names forward .. that's how the system is designed. As for some of the other comments here - well, take a deep breath folks, sheesh

@Jack "Why do we have to have the same old worn out recycled career politician as MP?"

Because he won the most votes. Substantially more votes than the 114 or 130 or whatever the handful was Leef won by last time. As for calling Larry Bagnell "elite" thanks for the laugh. Just how many MPs have we sent to Ottawa from a trailer court?

The Liberals can't do anything right, can they? One's too young and inexperienced, the other "old" and too experienced. Just as I suspected, the right-wing crowd are pretty bad losers, just as they were bad winners. But cheer up, dudes, it might never happen.

It is nice to see a change.
I had a hard time this election picking who was best as I was not sure any party really fit my views but one candidate did shine through to me and I voted for them.
I like some of what our new PM is saying and other things I don't but I figure this will always be the case. Like I gave Harper a chance when he was voted in (even though I personally did not vote Conservative) I will give Trudeau a chance to show what he has to offer our country. I am looking forward to seeing what happens- in four years if I decide I don't like how the past four years went (which I can honestly say I personally did not like what the past four years brought) I can vote again.
Also - awesome job getting out to vote fellow Yukoners! What a great turnout! Hope we can keep improving upon it!

Why do we have to have the same old worn out recycled career politician as MP? Our Democracy was designed to have people from all walks of life to represent us in Ottawa, instead this guy from the Liberal Party elite gets his nose back in the trough, claws back his MP perks and his Aeroplan Super Elite Card. Thanks alot Libs.

"The young, inexperienced, PM" - Who is about the same age as Harper and Obama were when they took office.

"PM is going to turn Canada into another Greece." - The last Liberal government left a 14 billion surplus. Germany would be a better comparison than Greece.

"When ISIS is at your doorstep" I'll start worrying when ISIS develops an air force and navy and is not on the other side of the world.

"your taxes are through the roof" Small business taxes are being cut as well as middle class income taxes.

"brothels start opening up beside daycares " get back to me when you have an example of a brothel next to a daycare.

You might be scared Bud but I'm not nor was I scared when inexperienced young Harper and his band of right wing misfits took the helm in Ottawa all those years ago. The sky will not fall nor will we see brothels full of ISIS soldiers high on marijuana paid for with your tax dollars next to our daycares.

The best part of having this election over will be an end to having to listen to the far right and far left using fear, lies, conspiracy theories and bad science to scare us into accepting their non-centrist ideology assuming that we are too brainwashed or unintelligent to make our own minds up about the issues.

Anyways, glad Larry and the Libs got in with a clean campaign and a fairly decent platform. Time will tell but a Lib win is probably the safest outcome for Canada this election.

Scared of change, scared of people who are not Caucasian, scared of their own shadows.
Brothels beside daycares? What are you smoking "Bud"? I guess your name answers my question.

I am scared....very very scared for our future. The young, inexperienced, PM is going to turn Canada into another Greece. Take a look at the slow-rolling disaster in Ontario under tax-and-spend Premier Wynne, and that's what's coming to all of Canada. When ISIS is at your doorstep, your taxes are through the roof, and our dollar is worth 50 cents U.S. all you people that voted for change will regret it. When you can't build a garden shed in your backyard without First Nation approval, all the jobs have left Canada for more pro-business countries, and brothels start opening up beside daycares you people will regret your vote. What a shame.

Today was a victory for all Canadians to end the Harper Nightmare & also a victory for strategic voting!
How many times we were accused of having no morals & conscience & that we were perverting the “sacred” vote by selling out to the highest poller! But we came together & put our differences aside to unite under the banner of Canada deserved better than Harper & his CONs!
This sacrifice helped us to be free of our Reform chains & be able to work together to help rebuild this country into the once great nation it was!
Trudeau promised electoral reform so this should be the last time we need to strategic vote so next election we can all vote with our hearts!
Thank you Canada for believing in yourself & not letting labels or parties divide & conquer us!
Even though I’m Green it was very easy for me to vote for Larry!
Way to go & good luck in helping to rebuild Canada!
Thank you to Melissa & Frank for putting your names forward to help make Canada better!
Thank you too Ryan for your 4 years of service. Even though there was very few things I agreed with you on…I still appreciate you doing what you thought was your best for the Yukon.
