A group of protesters concerned about bigamy laws turned up at the Yukon government's main administration building, then moved on to the law courts early Thursday afternoon.

"We wanted the message out,” said Elinore Frederickson, one of the event's key organizers.

Last November, Yukon Supreme Court Justice Leigh Gower handed down an order that the second wife of a bigamist must give him 50 per cent of their joint assets as part of their divorce.

Evangeline Ramirez argued throughout the trial that she was not aware of her husband Benjamin Toquero's marriage to another woman.

Speaking this morning, Frederickson noted documents associated with the case suggest that there's no public interest in the Yukon over bigamy.

That's just not the case, she said, and yesterday's protest was held to show that.

Protesters held up signs stating: "Bigamy is a crime” and "Are women in Yukon/Canada persons to be RESPECTED or doormats to to step on?????”, among others.

While only about a half-dozen people turned out for the protest, Frederickson noted there were about four others who indicated they would have liked to have been there, but were worried about being targeted if they turned out.

Frederickson argued that bigamy is a crime under the Criminal Code.

She's encouraging people to continue to express their concerns by email or writing to the RCMP.

The 'bygamist' or however you spell it, in this article is a man from the Phillipines. There is no avenue for divorce in that country, so technically people remain married even if they are years and thousands of miles apart. The '2nd wife', as it was presented in court, used her husband as an employee in her cleaning business and it sounds like she wore the pants so to speak, was not some kind of downtrodden woman. I trust that the judge made a reasonable and just decision in this case.

Maybe she is just shocked that she will be cutting a cheque to a man in a divorce proceeding. Welcome to Canada! Equal rights go both ways and I think most women are very comfortable with that.

PS - I am with June. If people want to live in a threesome, foursome or whatever, that's none of my business. Just do not groom children for these arrangements and do not conduct trade in young marriage partners. I know a set of adults in Alaska where two kids were born on the same day in the same hospital to two different women, both of whom lived with and I believe continue to live with 'dad'. He is a great guy, sense of humour and friendly, and they are a happy family. It's nobody's business if they are happy. Kids are grown up now and are successful adults with kids of their own!

Any man who wants more than 1 wife at a time, should be checked by a mental health professional.

Bigamy is in the criminal code in most countries I think..however..personally.. and as always I speak only for myself.. I don't care who you choose to love or live with..the world is changing..go to work every day, pay your taxes, I do not care what consenting adults choose to do or who they choose to do it with.. To quote the wise Spock, Live long and prosper.

In Bountiful, BC polygamy came under fire.. but at the heart of this was one clan selling/trading their underage females to other clans.. this is NOT consenting adults. Polygamy and bigamy are virtually the same thing..but bigamy seems to imply deception while polygamy implies knowledge.

A personal comment.. who in their right mind wants more than one spouse?
