SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE – Flanked by Yukon Party election candidates, Premier Darrell Pasloski (centre) discusses the campaign platform he hopes will propel his party to a fourth consecutive victory on Nov. 7. The news conference took place at Quantum Machine Works.

‘We have a plan and a vision for the future’

The Yukon Party unveiled its full 36-page election platform today.

The Yukon Party unveiled its full 36-page election platform today.

Premier Darrell Pasloski continued his pledge to “stand up for Yukoners” by saying no to the carbon tax the federal government plans to impose on all provinces and territories that don’t create their own.

Throughout the territorial election campaign, the Yukon Party has argued against a carbon tax.

The tax, he argued today during the platform release at Quantum Machine Works, would cost the average family in the territory $2,600 each year, with the costs of groceries, gasoline and diapers, among much more, going up.

“Our True North plan is focused on keeping life affordable through low taxes, creating jobs and fighting the carbon tax,” he told reporters gathered for the platform unveiling.

The platform sets out a number of subjects and highlights the party’s accomplishments in one column and the plan for the next five years in another column.

Under Keeping Taxes Low, for example, the party points to a record of balanced budgets, cuts in personal taxes and small business taxes, and higher child tax benefits.

The party also cites the extension of the interim electrical rates rebate subsidy, efficiencies made in government operations and the establishment of a caregiver tax credit.

Meanwhile, under the True North Plan for the next five years in the same category, the party proposes no tax increases, continuing to have no net debt, an increase to the caregiver tax credit, and the creation of a mineral exploration tax credit.

The party also points to its maintaining the tax credit for children’s fitness and art programs at a territorial level.

The party vows to continue its lobbying efforts to the federal government to reverse cuts to territorial formula financing – which originated in former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper’s final government and which were later eased by the Liberals – as well as the Yukon Party’s firm stance against the carbon tax.

The document also outlines actions planned on the economy, climate change, eliminating red tape, the land, health and social services, schools, post-secondary education and training, infrastructure, First Nations, justice and community safety, tourism and culture, sport and recreation, affordable housing and homelessness, and social justice.

Many of the plans the Yukon Party has for the territory have been the focus of announcements since the election was called Oct. 7.

In this morning’s media event, the party also highlighted its proposed “made-in-Yukon” curriculum and education system.

It would integrate northern perspectives, implement recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, promote financial and computer literacy and feature Yukon-specific curriculum in geology and earth sciences and an experiential trades program.

The platform notes the goal of seeing Yukon College’s transition to a university while maintaining a slew of trades and other programs it currently offers.

It also highlights another “made-in-Yukon” approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions that would create jobs by putting $100 million into retrofitting and developing renewable energy of Yukon buildings, doubling incentives that are available for green homes and commercial buildings, and by moving to electric vehicles for the government.

“We have a plan and a vision for the future,” Pasloski emphasized.

He stressed the importance of the resource industry in the territory’s economy despite the recent downturn in mining.

Now, more than ever, support for the resource sector is important, he said.

The full party platform is available online.

There's NO plan. There's NO vision. This is the party that was directly involved in the shady mountainview golf course deal, along with CBC's Vic Istchenko was then on the board: http://yukon-news.com/letters-opinions/one-more-reason-to-be-teed-off-about-the-mountain-view-mess/

We can't trust these backroom dealing politicians. vote them out!

A vision that includes golf courses / petulant lawsuits / soccer fields / not needed bridges / cheaper beer isn't much of a vision.

THere will be a Liberal Majority in Yukon come election day on Oct 29, 2016 at 11:28 am

@ Let's make a prediction:
I sure hope you are not betting the house on that election result!

People vote strategically, vote Liberal, a vote for the NDP is a vote for yp.

The Yukon Party's plan is no more than administering program funding transferred annually from the Federal Government. The YG will receive these types of program dollars regardless of which party is governing on behalf of the citizens in Yukon. I would imagine that the YP plans to finance their visionary retrofitting idea by using the surplus funding accrued from when Minister Cathers halted the affordable housing strategy that so many Yukoners needed a couple of years ago?

Go Yukon Party hah ha! on Oct 28, 2016 at 3:06 pm

" We have a plan and a vision for the future." What they left off was, " and a nightmare in the past."

Voting liberal will put a positive swing on Yukon politics. Great team assembled. There don't appear to be many ego maniacs in the group, and they look stately, much like a government in waiting should. There are folks from both sides of the political spectrum that have come together to put the needs of ALL Yukoners on centre stage. Give them the chance, they will do a fine job by all of us.

They will just change the subcontractors that do their work. No government in the last 25 years has actually made a change to help the Yukoners.

Two things:

If Yukon is "TrueNorth" what do we call places further north and more central in Canada? Also, where is the northwest if Yukon is TrueNorth?

2nd: I just heard Paz on the radio saying "this election is about one thing: You and your family".....now i'm no mathematician but, "You" is one thing and "Your Family" is another. Sooooooo the election is about TWO things lol.

A dose of reality to the discussion on Oct 28, 2016 at 9:45 am

Some facts again to bring reality to this discussion.

1] Federal transfers to the Yukon will be $ 946 MILLION this fiscal year for Formula Financing, Health and Social transfers.

2] That is an increase of $ 200 MILLION per year from the amount Yukon received 5 years ago.

Please do follow the link and see for yourself.

http://www.fin.gc.ca/fedprov/mtp-eng.asp#Yukon

3] It is not because of some great management of the economy that the Yukon government has not raised taxes. It is because we get 83% of every dollar we spend from the federal government.

Everyone vote Liberal on Oct 27, 2016 at 10:33 pm

The so called Yukon Party are not good for the Yukon, never have been, they are good for themselves and their friends, the rest can eat cake.
There is only one way to get rid of the Yukon Party and that is to vote Liberal, if you vote NDP, you may as well vote Yukon Party. The Yukon needs a Liberal government, then you will see a Yukon we can all be proud of!

The "no net debt" is smoke & mirrors due to bookkeeping games. We are actually hundreds of millions in debt since Yukoners have to pay for new hospitals (the need was for improved community health clinics), new hydro facility in Mayo and new LNG plant in Whitehorse. Those plus a top heavy management in the Hospital Corp that built new offices instead of buying more beds.

I am done with the Yukon Party and their vision. Premier Darrell Pasloski should cover his eyes from daylight and look towards the golf course since that is a reasonable vision for him and most of his party.

Still open and eager to hear Sandy's and Liz's visions.

This platform should be nominated for a Yukon literature award, " Best short story in the Fiction category."
In summary Yukon Party where have you been?

They have a vision huh? Pasloski has apparently left out the part where they line their pockets (doubling their severance incomes could be called lining.) And he missed the part where they'll look after their friends, (say golf course).. He completely ignored perhaps having to hire more lawyers to launch his law suits.. Did anyone tell this dude how unpopular the Whistle Bend location was with the seniors? Did he care? I notice he has omitted any senior programs..that's not a good sign for us.. True North Plan? what a joke.

The best yet on Oct 27, 2016 at 3:46 pm

Sandy Silver and Liz Hanson talk about their (I) vision for the Yukon not the Yukoners vision.
Where the premier talked about we the Yukon people, not I the NDP or Liberal Party define their parties outlook.
Is we more in line what a party should do?

Shocked to see next to nothing in this platform for supporting struggling municipalities, most of whom get a pittance from the territorial government in core funding. At least the liberals committed to reviewing the comprehensive municipal grant.

Now that looks like a happy lot! It is also heart warming to know that after 14 years in power they now have a vision. Has medical marijuana been recently approved in the Yukon?
