A 20-year-old Watson Lake man is facing charges of pointing a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose after Whitehorse RCMP seized a BB gun early Monday evening.

The man, whose name was not released, was to appear in court later today.

Police were called to the Granger subdivision at 6:42 p.m. after receiving a report of a man pointing a firearm there.

Police set up a perimeter in the area, but no buildings were evacuated, they said this morning.

Using information from witnesses, police were able to find the man in an area behind Elijah Smith Elementary School, communicate with him and resolve the situation.

After further investigation, police learned the gun had been pointed at another person.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident, police said.

They are reminding residents that imitation, replica or toy guns may appear real, and caution should be used because charges could be laid depending on the circumstances in an incident.

Police are continuing to investigate Monday's incident.
