A water main break in the 300 block of Wood Street on Tuesday left buildings without water until Wednesday morning.

Peter O’Blenes, the city’s director of infrastructure and operations, said Wednesday afternoon city crews were on the scene early Tuesday afternoon.

They had to shut off water to the block, which is largely made up of local businesses, while they searched for the problem.

“It was not easily visible,” O’Blenes said.

Crews had to dig into the sidewalk and road before they finally located the issue near Fourth Avenue.

It’s believed bolts had rusted off an aging clamp, likely installed about 30 years ago, causing the break in the main.

Crews worked overnight on replacing and repairing the clamp, with traffic down to one lane.

The situation meant businesses were without water for several hours.

In the case of the Yukon Cinema movie theatre on the block, it meant it could not show the movies planned for Tuesday night.

“It is unfortunate,” Blenes said, noting he’s heard of a few people who had to change their plans for movie-viewing Tuesday night.

A Landmark Cinemas spokesperson could not be reached for comment on how the situation impacted the theatre.

By Wednesday afternoon, the city was reporting on social media that it was business as usual, stating: “Wood Street is now back to normal after a water break and repair. City crews thank you for your patience and understanding!”
