Voters have final choices for next city government

Nominations for the Oct. 15 city election closed at noon today with 26 candidates vying for a seat at the council table.

Of those, three are seeking the mayor’s chair, with the remaining 23 vying for one of six councillor’s seats.

Incumbent Mayor Dan Curtis will be up against Wilf Carter and Mandeep Sidhu, who was defeated by Curtis in his run for mayor in 2012.

This morning inside council chambers, returning officer Norma Felker was on hand to receive the final nomination forms to be filed.

Christine O’Connor became the final candidate to formally declare her intentions, filing her paperwork just under 10 minutes before the deadline.

The 49-year-old had worked for the city for more than 25 years when she retired from her post as a supervisor in planning.

She said this morning she took some time to “mull it over” before officially throwing her name in the hat.

Serving on council was something she has wanted to do for some time, O’Connor said, nothing she now has the time and experience to take on the role.

The number of candidates running in this election for a councillor seat is up by just one compared to 2012, when 22 people sought those seats.

“I’m quite pleased,” Felker said of the numbers.

Many people had only picked up nomination packages over the last week, she noted.

It shows there is interest in municipal governance, she pointed out.

In past elections, there have been anywhere from 18 to 35 candidates pursuing seats on council.

Seeking another consecutive term as councillors are incumbents Dave Stockdale, who’s looking for a 12th consecutive term; Betty Irwin, seeking a third term; and Jocelyn Curteanu, who wants to serve a second term.

Former councillor Kirk Cameron resigned earlier this year over city manager Christine Smith’s firings without cause of long-time directors Brian Crist and Rob Fendrick.

Cameron did not put his name forward after he had indicated he was considering running again.

In a recent interview, he said he would be consulting with his family before finally deciding whether to submit his nomination papers.

Meanwhile, other familiar names from the 2012 vote will also be showing up on the ballots.

Six candidates who were unsuccessful three years ago submitted their nomination forms.

They include Sidhu for mayor, along with councillor candidates Roslyn Woodcock, who was only three votes away from the final sixth seat on council in 2012, Cam Kos, Patrick Singh, Helen Geisler and Garth Brown.

Other candidates hoping to gain a seat on council for the 2015 to 2018 term include Louis Gagnon, who was the first candidate to file his paperwork and who will be the first candidate for councillor on the ballot, Philippe Praprotnik, Micah Quinn, Jens Nielsen, George Arcand, Fendrick, Serge Michaud, Peter Jickling, Ken Giam, Francine Thieuerge, Mike Travill and Keith Ellert.

Also running are former councillors Samson Hartland, who served as a councillor from 2000 to 2003, and Dan Boyd, who was was a councillor from 1994 to 2000.

Candidates have until Monday at noon to withdraw from the race.

After nominations closed at noon today, Jeff O’Farrell, the city’s manager of legislative services, drew the candidates’ names out of a hat to determine exactly where their name will appear on the ballots.

For the mayoral candidates, the order will see Sidhu’s name at the top of the list followed by Carter and Curtis.

The ballot order for councillors will appear as follows:

Louis Gagnon
Helen Geisler
Rob Fendrick
Philippe Praprotnik
Mike Travill
Patrick Singh
George Arcand
Betty Irwin
Ken Giam
Micah Quinn
Roslyn Woodcock
Dave Stockdale
Peter Jickling
Samson Hartland
Dan Boyd
Jens Nielsen
Francine Thieuerge
Serge Michaud
Cam Kos
Jocelyn Curteanu
Keith Ellert
Christine O’Connor
Garth Brown

Affordable housing on Oct 1, 2015 at 7:59 am

What is affordable housing? How do we deal with this issue.
There are already three levels of government in this area of housing.
Yukon Housing has multi program in affordable housing including mortgages and lots of programs.
After talking to Whitehorse residents 70% don't want the City into this because there is already three levels of government in affordable housing.
But they like to see the City in support and to assist a role to the other levels of government.
What will the City cut to get into the affordable business?
There are other options. Canadian Tire dealers and Corp invest a lot of money into their employees with profit sharing program.
The employees put nothing into it.
This money is the employees savings and they can use it for a down payment on a home.
Let's face it retail is where the low incomers work.

Wilf Carter

The City needs an overhaul on Oct 1, 2015 at 7:49 am

of our revenue and cost base. The way we are heading we are not going to sustain our services in a cost effective manner into the future. We cost share with YTG, new municipal finance program with YTG. We need to look at new ways of raising revenues maybe through more sponsorship.

Dan was not a perfect mayor. Honestly, I can't ever remember having a perfect mayor. However, given the options, I will be voting for Dan. Keep in mind that Dan stood up against the Yukon Government with respect to the proposed soccer field fiasco in Whistle Bend. He wanted assurances that the CofW wasn't going to be left holding the bag as it were, the YP only said "trust us". Wilf Carter is on record as wanting to lead the CofW down that road. Who is the "tax and spend" mayor, Wilf??? Gullibility seems to be a trait we can assign to Mr. Carter.

From Wilf Carter's comment to the Star re. PTSD on February 6, 2015:
"I have had four strokes, cancer, suffer from PTSD and other chronic health issues because of working in environment that was not safe or healthy according to my medical providers and government insurance company"
Uh, Wilf, are you even physically able to work, never mind be our mayor??

Carter for Mayor? on Sep 29, 2015 at 12:12 pm

Wilf for Mayor? That's nine trillion years of experience in EVERYTHING. Oh, and a whole lot of hot air, too.

Dan Curtis is a tax and spend Mayor. Do residents of Whitehorse want that?
Or do the residents want a experienced manager that has solid track record in managing municipal services such as Wilf Carter.
Experience is what the City needs in leadership.

Congratulations to all the candidates. I have a lot of respect for anyone who has the gumption to step forward and subject themselves to being put in the spotlight, especially considering some of the comments that fly around on websites such as this one occasionally. Having said that, candidates who run on a platform of fiscal control and responsibility (no 8 million soccer fields plus O&M comes to mind) will be getting my vote.

eh? Since when does running a launderette or a gas-stand deliver any sort of experience worth voting for? Give it up Sidhu.

It is time for a change! Vote for a new set of councillors with the experience and knowledge required to make good decisions for us citizens, Dan Boyd, Roslyn Woodcock, Serge Michaud and Rob Fendrick come to mind immediately. Oh and of course Sidhu.

Good luck to all the new candidates...personally..don't want to see any of Glenda or the old familiar faces on council again...

Please remember the last two councils used hiking taxes as a way to achieve a superficial facade of prosperity..we aren't prosperous...we're broke..trying to live within our means..don't let your personal agendas get in the way of wise decisions..and you will be a good council..

Boring list of candidates imo. And sidhu trying for mayor again. Not a chance in hell he will win.

Oh dear, that's a pretty grim shortlist for Mayor. Sadly I can't see either challenger seriously knocking on the door, not with Curtis' with his foot wedged in already. Frankly I'd vote for our king of literacy and grammar Josey Wales for office - could you imagine The Outlaw in charge of the ranch! Yikes!

Wow, that is a lot of folks running up to feed from the unaccountable public trough.
Seems a few grew hungry since last feeding and are back.
Whoever pulls it off, enjoy...eat your fill...absolutely nothing bad will happen to you resulting from your "ideas".
Nothing to you, but our community however?
Never mind, the Whitehorse I knew is a mere blip in history and long gone never to return.
....as a result of many before themselves nudging into the feed trough never giving much of a shite about much but themselves.
As politicians do, and will do...till we the people stop them.
