Victoria man arrested after holiday violence

Whitehorse RCMP arrested a Victoria man on Boxing Day after an alleged string of assaults and extortion attempts.
Ricco Zanolli faces 11 charges, including extortion, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and several weapons charges following a Christmas weekend investigation by the RCMP.
The investigation began Christmas Eve, when police received a call from a Porter Creek resident who had been shot in the arm.
Kevin Ehret told police he was shot by a man he didn't know, during an argument in his home.
"In the initial shooting, that victim has no involvement with this gentleman,” police spokesman Sgt. Don Rogers explained this morning. "He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Ehret was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital, treated and released.
According to documents filed in court on Monday, on the same day at another location the shooter used the same 9-mm handgun to extort $11,000 from another Whitehorse man.
Early Boxing Day morning, police received a call from Crestview, reporting a man had been beaten with a handgun and a roll of duct tape, and stabbed, Rogers said.
Court documents indicate the victim of this attack was a relative of the man who had handed over $11,000 two days earlier, and police identified Zanolli as the suspect in both incidents.
Further investigation led police to suspect Zanolli of two other assaults and an extortion attempt between Dec. 11 and Dec. 24, all committed against the stabbing victim.
He was also accused of threatening to kill the extortion victim and his family.
The 20-year-old B.C. man was located by police hours after the stabbing, near Policeman's Point on Lake Laberge.
Zanolli and a 26-year-old woman from Atlin, B.C. were arrested without incident, Rogers said.
The arrest was made with the help of the Yukon's RCMP emergency response team.
"Because of the nature of the offences, we wanted to ensure everyone's safety,” Rogers said of calling in the tactical team. "We were able to arrest them with as much planning and consideration as possible.”
The woman has been charged with two weapons offences and a breach of a court order.
"She was involved in some parts of this throughout,” Rogers said of the Atlin woman. "We'll know more once the investigation is complete.”
Zanolli is not known to Whitehorse police, Rogers said, but has a criminal record from B.C., and is barred from possessing a firearm.
He faces several extortion charges, including one charge for possession of the proceeds of crime, as well as a number of weapons and assault charges.

Nice to see violent crime on the upswing in the Yukon. And I'm sure we will see these nice people back on the street in the just a few days time. Oh, the great white north! Is there just a better place to be.

Let hope our lovely legal system doesn't let these idiots out on bail. They won't stick around for long.
