A 15-year-old girl was treated in Whitehorse General Hospital for a broken left leg after she was struck by another teen learning to drive in a parking lot Tuesday.
The girl was hit at around 5:15 p.m. in the parking lot near the Subway restaurant at Second Avenue and Ogilvie Street.
The RCMP say she was walking on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant when she was struck.
A 16-year-old driver with a learner's permit was parking a vehicle in front of the business.
He was being supervised by a licensed adult, as is required for a driver with a learner's permit.
He thought he had put the vehicle into reverse but instead had put it into drive, police say.
The vehicle accelerated forward, striking the pedestrian, then continuing on, hitting the window of the building, breaking the glass and damaging the building.
At the hospital, the injured girl was treated for serious crush injuries to her leg and released, hospital spokesperson Val Pike said today.
The 2011 Ford Escape was seized for a mechanical inspection. Police are continuing the investigation to determine what, if any, charges will be laid.
An RCMP collision analyst attended the scene and is assisting in the investigation.
Alcohol was not a factor, police said.
Neither the name of the driver nor the name of the injured pedestrian are being released.
