A significant snowstorm in Vancouver delayed Air North flights leaving Whitehorse Tuesday by several hours, but they all got there, Air North president Joe Sparling said today.

“We did not cancel any,” he told the Star. “We were a little delayed, quite delayed on some.”

Sparling said Tuesday’s morning flight, the mid-day flight and the late afternoon flight were all delayed until 8 p.m.

“They had the (Vancouver) airport closed for a while so we could not leave Whitehorse,” he noted.

“Once they reopened, we could launch everything at the same time, and we got everybody moved.”

The delays on Tuesday cascaded into Wednesday just because of the required time for the crews to get their rest, he said.

“Today, we are almost back to normal with another storm on the way for Vancouver tomorrow.”

He said a flight is on its way to Toronto today with snow and wind forecast for the Ontario capital.

“Hopefully, we don't have any cancellations.

“It’s the weather,” he said. “I know northerners in particular understand the weather challenges.

“You just have to take things in stride and get back to normal as quickly as you can.”

Sparling said the flights to Alberta have so far not been impacted.

Vancouver’s weather problems also impacted some Air Canada flights leaving Whitehorse this week.

The BC news program I was watching yesterday was covering the YVR story. The video showed the board with the status of each flight. All flights showed as either “delayed” or “cancelled…except of course the flight to Whitehorse which showed “boarding”. I bet Air North would put snow tires on their aircraft it it would make a difference for Yukoners!

Food was the issue on Tuesday, not so much for myself but many people whom had longer than my delays. Also noticed families with young children running out of their “ packed for flying” food. I heard that some snacks were provided. Never saw any of that or was told how to locate it.
Maybe a delivery service with a menu from local restaurants could be set up for ease of flyers to access.
Besides that, maybe have some baby needs available, hears a mother complaining that she had no diapers or food available for her toddler.
Never easy to travel during this holiday time or winter weather. Air North you did a GREAT job and Service as always.
