Charges under the Motor Vehicles Act are pending against a 42-year-old Skagway resident after a 62-year-old motorcyclist was killed on the Alaska Highway in western Yukon Tuesday evening.

The RCMP Beaver Creek detachment was notified of the motorcycle having gone off the highway, approximately 80 kilometres south of Beaver Creek, at approximately 6:15 p.m.

Arriving with Beaver Creek Emergency Medical Services personnel, police determined that the driver of the motorcyle lost control after braking to avoid an oncoming vehicle and slid off the highway.

The 62-year-old Valdez, Alaska motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police remind all motorists to exercise the utmost care on Yukon roadways. Motorists should adjust their driving according to road conditions, other traffic and the possibility of wildlife on road surfaces.

RCMP also advise motorists to stay alert, reduce speed and always wear their seat belts properly.
