KEEPING THE PUBLIC INFORMED – Community Services Minister John Streicker (far left) speaks at Wednesday afternoon’s COVID-19 update. With him are Mary Tiesen, the Yukon government’s American sign language interpreter, and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health.

Vaccine seekers will be checked more thoroughly

After a British Columbia millionaire and his wife were charged with fraudulently obtaining doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the Yukon government is moving to vet people attending the clinics more carefully.

At the weekly COVID-19 briefing Wednesday, Community Services Minister John Streicker said people showing up for the vaccine will have to bring proof of residency with them – particularly those who don’t have a Yukon health card.

“This has sent a real jitter through the system,” he said. “But we don’t want to make it difficult for Yukoners to get vaccinated either.

“So we also made changes to our vaccine eligibility at our clinics. If you live in the Yukon and don't have a health card, a temporary worker, student or recently relocated, you’re eligible to be vaccinated in the Yukon but will have to bring valid ID plus one of the following.

“A valid Yukon student card, proof of employment in the Yukon, or reasonable proof of Yukon residency; for example, a utility bill.”

In an accompanying news release, the government stated, “Proof of residency will be required to receive a vaccination, such as government-issued identification, a Yukon health care card, or mail displaying your name and address.

“After receiving a vaccine, Yukoners must continue following health measures, such as wearing a mask.”

As has been well-documented, Rodney and Ekaterina Baker claimed to be working at the nearby 1202 Motel in Beaver Creek – but in reality had only flown in for the day on Jan. 21.

One of the couple presented an Ontario health card, while another had a B.C. health card.

The ruse fell apart when the couple slipped up and, looking to leave Beaver Creek, asked for a ride to the airport, which was two kilometres away – a distance that could be easily walked.

That’s how the couple finally returned to their chartered plane, but it also set tongues wagging in the small community, and it wasn’t long before what seems like a carefully-planned escapade fell apart.

The Bakers were eventually found at the Whitehorse airport. They were charged with two counts each under the Civil Emergency Measures Act provisions.

“If you’re a Canadian but do not live in the Yukon, you’re not eligible to be vaccinated in the Yukon,” Streicker emphasized. “You must be be vaccinated in your home jurisdiction.”

The caper threw a pall on what had otherwise been a relatively decent couple of weeks for the pandemic in the Yukon.

It’s been more than two weeks since any new cases have been found, and more than a week since the last active case has been cleared. The current case count remains at 70.

Streicker and the territory’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Brendan Hanley, were quick to praise how the rollout of the vaccine is working – despite controversy in Whitehorse, where the Yukon Convention Centre clinic has not been running anywhere near capacity.

“Yes, there have been concerns raised about the booking system,” Hanley said at Wednesday’s briefing.

“There have been glitches. 2021 has brought new challenges, but we have to be patient and wait for our turn to get a vaccine.”

The website for the government’s vaunted booking system is consistently showing it’s running at 50 per cent capacity or less, but Hanley said that was a bit deceiving.

He was particularly critical of people who have been sending screen shots to the government and media of the booking site on a daily basis.

“We all know there have been glitches in booking,” Hanley said.

“While it has been challenging at times to recognize and correct those glitches, the use of the booking system has helped tremendously with clinic flow and our ability to effectively plan for the right amount of vaccines in the right amount of immunized or is on site to ensure a smooth thoroughfare of individuals receiving their vaccinations.

“Despite what you may have read in the news, it is important and very helpful when individuals book appointments in advance,” Hanley added.

“While the clinic does have limited capacity for walk-ins, individuals are preferred to make an appointment.”

Hanley seemed to be in a somewhat self-congratulatory mood as he talked about the clinics.

“I am very pleased with the progress of the campaign so far, and if people step up, we will see the numbers mount rapidly.

“I know it can be frustrating for people to feel we could be running more people through, but we are managing these initial limits very carefully for reasons I have previously explained.

“Our focus is on older Yukoners, those in long-term care, and and covering vulnerable populations living in group settings and getting out and around to all our communities.

“That means a lot of vaccinators are out and about all around Yukon while the detailed training of more vaccinated heirs is still going on.”

That focus on the communities, Hanley said, “ultimately mean less hands on deck of the Whitehorse clinic until we ramp up for the Whitehorse clinics where they will then be prepared to crank through as many people as our supplies allow.”

The clinic hasn’t been open on weekends due to a lack of staff and the need to provide them with time off, Hanley said.

It will run six days a week when it opens to the general public.

@ Jane - It's more than simply breaking a rule when you use dishonest means to get what you want.
@ Nathan Living - They did not practice the social distancing rules; they got into a small airplane with the pilot right after getting off the plane from Vancouver. No isolation putting that pilot's health at risk. More than just a bit selfish I would say.
Apparently YG is going for blood.... they stayed the fines and laid charges instead.
That guy is in the news again today re the inquest into money laundering in the casinos. His vaccine antics will now go towards showing how dishonest he is to prove his company likely had the same kind of character and possibly allowed the money laundering. Karma, I say.

Thank you Jane, Count me out, and Nathan for offering a sane approach to this situation. Everyone has broken a rule or two before. YG/Streicker with the faux rage - settle down! YG in particular - the pot calling the kettle ‘carbonized’. YG is a frequent violator of its own rules and in ways that are profoundly discriminatory - Excuse me while I vomit!

Perhaps you should all look at yourselves in the mirror good and hard and ask yourselves how each one of you has contributed to the campaign of psychological terror that has some people so scared that they will fly thousands of kilometres to escape.

And then we have this group of people who are so unquestionably compliant that they, out of their own fear, will rat, snitch, and mob their own neighbours, friends, family, community members, and others. Just to be clear, I include this incident regarding the vaccines but it goes much deeper than this.

WTF is wrong with you and how can you not see your behaviour as destructive? And then I remember with disgusted contempt that we as a Yukon society allow and sustain the workplace environments inside YG that are a mirror reflection of these comment pages. And this is the problem that arises when MLAs like Mostyn fail to address serious problems in the civil service management structure because we as individuals take our cues of what is moral from the outside world around us,

So, Jane, I am in agreement that we should start listing everyone’s faults and catalogue all of their wrongdoings so that when they feel the urge to join the mob we can remind them of their own transgressions.

Tired of the hypocritical witch hunts. This is Canada and we have rights. So the couple broke a “rule” big deal. Let those who haven't broken a covid rule during this stupid plandemic step up on the soapbox. Step up and we’ll dig a bit and see.

Just want to add another voice to the chorus of thanks I hope the good Doctor and his vaccine teams are receiving.

Agree or disagree with his decisions, but it’s hard to argue with the fact that this particular senior level administrator has been exceptionally responsive to the public he serves. Even when that public is critical using selective facts, time is at least taken to explain the reasoning. Yes, yes the salary is good, but ensuring his retention and stability of leadership in that office has seen a reasonable return on that investment, in my opinion.

Vaccine hesitancy and personal health improvement are the main issues to tackle moving forward. Though much will be made of micro managing restrictions mostly as political theatre, healthy vaccinated people make the strongest possible case for a bright future.

John Streiker is not speaking for me when he claims "all" Yukoners are outraged by the couple. Without condoning their actions, I am a lot more concerned about the government response, which has left me wondering if they are trying to direct the courts and the RCMP towards more charges and a harsh fine. I just can't remember seeing such blatant recommendations coming from political leaders for an alleged violation. That includes federal minister Marc Miller, who I thought was a lawyer, suggesting this couple should be sending reparations to the First Nation, since supposedly they're "wealthy". Which First Nation leaders are already soliciting.

The media is pandering to one side of the drama, and I suggest they seek comment for a different perspective about the response from somewhere like the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Which is their job.

I keep hearing these same leaders talking about "mental health", "compassion" "vulnerability" and "kindness" in the very same conversations in which they are verbally bullying this couple, which they seem to think is okay, based on what they've gleaned from internet gossip and some rudimentary research that says they are "multi-millionaires". This is not our finest moment and I look forward to it blowing up in their faces, as these episodes tend to.

With vaccines here, it's time to push the government for the exit strategy from living under the emergency management act. Instead Streiker is digging down for steeper fines, egged on by First Nations, media, and internet commenters, as though this is a permanent condition. I suppose we will all get fines eventually, then, as the regulations increase, instead of being reduced.

I agree with Nathan Living, we are in a privileged position. Our sense of entitlement is exceeding the one they criticize in this desperate couple. Those shouldn't be "our" vaccines to give or withhold, and that isn't the alleged "crime", which people seem to be forgetting, including the government.

The Yukon rollout of the covid vaccine is working very well and we should give credit to our local government as well as the generosity of the Federal liberals and Canadians.

We are well looked after here with trsnsfer payments and what appears to be preferential treatment for covid vaccines. We have reached what I would say is an elite entitlement level.

Perhaps its best not to not flaunt our 1.6 billion or $40,000 per person in transfer payments. And our generous tax breaks are awesone. As are our care homes which cost just 40 dollars per day.

The public and government overreaction to the line jumpers is very disturbing and we should chill a little before it gets out of hand. Our justice system routinely shows leniency thus jail time for jumping a vaccination cue line seems inappropriate and I worry that these people may not get a fair trial in Yukon.

If these people desperately wanted a vaccine and pushed the envelope by cue jumpimg its likely they were practicing all the social distancing requirements and just went too far with their choices.

At the end of the day they committed a crime to promote their health. Sure its entiltnent but they were just trying to stay healthy.

We need clear and upfront info about this vaccine. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that pregnant women, people with allergies, those under 18, and the frail elderly should NOT take the covid Moderna vaccine:

Whoever thought that something like this would happen? Personally, I think it's a one off. But, I also think if they had just said, at any clinic, look, we're in town, can we get our shot here? I can't see any of our medical people, or any one else saying, no. We're chuck full of exceptions. In any case, everyone should have to show a Yukon Health card. I have to show it at the hospital labs, and they all know me by name. Have to show it anyway. Vaccines should be no different.

Not sure how these rules weren't in place before hand.. all I hear is blah blah blah, cheap talk. All talk no action. Liberals 101.
