Vaccine recipients make Yukon medical history

The first two people in the Yukon to receive the new Moderna vaccine for COVID-19 said it was a breeze.

By Tim Giilck on January 5, 2021

The first two people in the Yukon to receive the new Moderna vaccine for COVID-19 said it was a breeze.

Agnes Mills and Mary Merchant, who are residents of Whistle Bend Place, spoke on conference call interviews Monday afternoon after attending a vaccine clinic at the care facility.

Mills was the first to receive the vaccine. The 84-year-old Indigenous elder said she felt “very privileged” to receive the vaccine, while Merchant said she was “surprised.”

Merchant, who is 103 and made a career as a nurse, said she wasn’t concerned about receiving the shot “at all.

“I didn’t want to catch the bug going around,” she added. “I’ve had a lot of vaccinations in my life, and I’ve never had a bad reaction. I didn’t feel a thing.”

Mills said she also wasn’t concerned about the process.

“I have faith in the medical system,” she said. “I just have a bit of a sore arm.

“I want to enjoy my life more,” she added.

That includes seeing more of her friends and family. That’s the major change the pandemic has wrought in her life, Mills said.

The government’s distribution plan calls for residents in long-term care homes to have priority access to the vaccine, as well as front-line health care workers.

The Yukon received 7,200 doses on Dec. 29.

It hasn’t been specified whether that means 7,200 people will be inoculated to start with, or whether those doses will be reserved for 3,600 people. The Moderna vaccine requires two doses 28 to 35 days apart to be fully effective.

Mills is a Vuntut Gwitchin elder from Old Crow. She was inducted into the Order of Yukon last month for her lifelong work to advance the rights of Indigenous people (see Monday’s Star).

“When I was 13, I was in a residential school and there was a tuberculosis epidemic,” Mills said.

“I caught it and was in the hospital for three years. I never fully recovered and have been unwell all my life.

“I got the vaccine (Monday) because I am worried about what a COVID-19 infection would do to me,” Mills added.

“I am almost 85 years old and want to continue my life – to be here for my family, my children and my grandchildren. I care for mankind and would like to see us overcome this virus.”

Merchant was born in Scotland and survived the influenza pandemic of 1918 to 1920. She moved to the Yukon in 1995.

The third vaccine went to Jun Carpina, a domestic aide who works in the home.

Originally from the Philippines, Carpina has lived in the Yukon for 14 years. He was not made available for an interview.

“Today is a day filled with hope for our territory,” Health and Social Services Minister Pauline Frost said in a media release.

“The first Yukoners to receive the vaccine will be our most vulnerable to COVID-19 and those who care for them.

“In the coming weeks and months, all adult Yukoners will have the opportunity to receive the vaccine and help bring us one step closer to ending the pandemic,” the minister said.

“Everyone who receives the vaccine is choosing to protect themselves and everyone around them.”

Dr. Brendan Hanley, the medical officer of health for the Yukon, said “throughout the pandemic, we have asked Yukoners to make choices to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.

“The best thing we can do now is to choose to vaccinate when it is our turn. This vaccine will save lives and will protect our most vulnerable.

“Over time, it will allow us to return to a normal life, but now is not the time to let our guard down,” Hanley said.

“Stay vigilant, continue to practise the Safe 6 plus 1 (masks), and get ready to roll up your sleeve.”

Meanwhile, one new case of COVID-19 reported Monday in the Yukon.

Case 65 is a Whitehorse resident linked to a previous case. The person is self-isolating and recovering at home. Contact tracing is currently underway.

No public exposure notifications are required at this time, the government said Monday afternoon.

Anyone experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms should self-isolate and remain at home, take the online self-assessment and arrange to get tested.

@Al
YG has had staff photographers for decades and from time to time they contract local pros for some projects.

@ Nathan,
A vaccine does exactly what you wrote in your statement.
"Vaccines help develop immunity by imitating an infection. This type of infection, however, almost never causes illness, but it does cause the immune system to produce T-lymphocytes and antibodies."
See here more more detailed info: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/conversations/understanding-vacc-work.html

Yes, @Nathan, I will certainly pass on this rushed vaccine, which is said to NOT provide immunity, it only suppresses the symptoms. It’s quite telling that all 66 local ‘covid cases’ only had mild symptoms, or no symptoms at all, and ‘recovered’ at home. If that’s what a covid infection is about, then I would prefer the long-term immunity it provides.

As for the one reported death in Watson Lake of someone who happened to test positive for covid, this was an elderly person with several other pre-existing conditions who was closely followed by health professionals, and died at home. This person may have died with covid, but absolutely no evidence has been presented that he died OF covid.

Statistics for covid deaths have been bungled by including anyone who died while testing positive for covid, but most likely died of other pre-existing conditions. This is being used to justify lockdowns and it should be a national scandal.

Not sure I want the vaccine, is it possible to be given covid to develop my own immunity?

@Lost in the Yukon: Yup you are right my friend - it is all about the optics ! No substance - just optics. All the photos were professionally taken - they didn't trust the media - hmm, gotta wonder about that ?

@ Dave - Federal penitentiaries are for sentences of two years or more, so sorry, shoplifting won't cut it in this case. I hear Snowbird Canadians living in Florida are getting the vaccine there (much to the ire of Floridians). Bottom line: If you want the vaccine in a hurry, either kill someone or move to Florida, lol.

This is another Silver, Frost screwup ... the vaccine arrives (not the 50,000 Silver promised but 7,500) ... Silver Frost and Streicker get a very nice photo op.
The vaccine has been here for almost two weeks yet as of today there was still no plan as to when and where clinics will be held and who can go to them.

As of last Saturday the hospital still had not seen a plan for when vaccination would happen there. As of last Saturday people tagged to give the vaccination had received no training or received information as to when and where. As of Monday people who had been volunteering to help with distribution and delivery had been brushed off by YG ...

When asked what the plans are, all they say is “stay tuned” WTF!
But Silver, Frost and Streicker have probably gotten theirs and they did get a nice photo-op.
This is the least competent, least transparent Government the Yukon has ever seen.
Too bad the media is so complicit in letting them spin tales without challenging them and getting at the truth.

In other news the federal government has announced a pilot project to give hundreds of federal prison inmates priority Covid vaccinations. So that literally begs the question, who do you have to kill around here to get a Covid vaccine? How bad of a person do you have to be for the federal Liberals to reward you with a priority vaccination? Will something simple like shoplifting do the trick or do you need to assault someone or pull off an armed robbery?

Well, I wish them all the best. Hoping there are no serious adverse effects and the vaccine gives them a lasting measure of protection from severe illness.

I do think it's a bit sleazy on the part of government to use these elderly patients for what is essentially a propaganda photo shoot. Where is the Privacy Commissioner?

Sodium Chloride - Table Salt, essential to achieving homeostasis.

Potassium Chloride - Potassium is a mineral found in many foods and is needed for several functions of your body, especially the beating of your heart.
Potassium chloride is used to prevent or to treat low blood levels of potassium (hypokalemia).
Potassium levels can be low due to a disease or from taking certain medicines, or after a prolonged illness with diarrhea or vomiting.

Ignorance and being totally uneducated is bliss for the stupid, who wants you vaccinated why? To bring back World Championship Wrestling? Is Hogan, Nash, and Hall still running the show?

Sodium chloride and potassium chloride is in a lot of things - most notably, we add them to food for flavour and preservation, we use them in medical electrolyte solutions to maintain the correct mineral balance in dehydrated people, and yes, in high quantities or concentrations, it any also have industrial applications. These are just two chemical nomenclatures for different types of SALT. Please stop spreading such harmful misinformation. This isn't something to be afraid of.

Oh man on Jan 5, 2021 at 8:00 pm

Umm.. Sodium Chloride is table salt... It's a saline solution. Your body has natural salinity and for any fluid you put into it it's best to match your body's natural salinity.

And yes potassium chloride is used to stop the heart in lethal injections but #1) the covid vaccines are intramuscular vaccines they are not intravenous like lethal injection (route of administration causes changes in an effect) and #2) potassium chloride is a perfectly normal salt found in foods and medicines all over. If you don't want potassium chloride don't eat meat, soups, or drink sports drinks.

Stop spreading crazy misinformation. Guess what can also kill you? Too much dihydrogen oxide.. But I bet you drink a lot of that daily too

"Made Yukon medical history". The Yukon's absolutely worst trait. All puffed up about doing the minimum. So they've done three shots so far? Or are they just eking the information out in dribs and drabs, taking the focus away from the actual performance.

You know what, we've been getting pounded with the statistics for COVID cases from all over the country for almost a year now. The least they can do is give us the numbers for vaccinations. Seems like it would be an easy statistic to manage, how many given, how many to go. How many per day. How hard could that be.

I heard on the radio they planned to do 50 yesterday. Wonder how that went. Nothing about that in this article. At that rate it will take about five months to do just this shipment.

Come on, media, you can make this happen.

Sodium chloride, potassium chloride are ingredients in this vaccine. They also make up 2/3 shots given when receiving the death penalty in USA.. how ironic.. truth is, the more this goes on the less scary it is, and mere political in order to usher in Agenda 2030 and the NWO that's been talked about for 30+ years now.. world wide death rate is 0.0002%, Canadas is 0.0004%.. don't believe me, it's still true. Your ignorance is their bliss
