Untreated wastewater is entering Yukon River

Untreated wastewater will be pouring into the Yukon River in Whitehorse for an undetermined period of time.

By Whitehorse Star on August 30, 2022

Revised - Untreated wastewater is pouring into the Yukon River in Whitehorse for an undetermined period of time.

Repairs began early Tuesday morning to repair a leaking sanitary force main near the river.

“Despite efforts to empty and repair the main earlier (Tuesday), additional damage has been discovered,” the city said Tuesday afternoon.

“A larger crack has been identified near the original leak, and crews are now exploring additional repair options.”

The Marwell lift station has had to be taken offline, and bypass valves are discharging wastewater into the river.

“To minimize the amount of wastewater entering the river, residents are asked to reduce their water usage as much as possible, including flushing toilets until the repairs are complete,” the city said.

“The city is taking all possible steps to reduce the impact on the area and will also be doing water sampling at the site and downstream to better understand any impacts to the river.”

The public is also asked to minimize recreational use of the river around the Marwell area and downstream until further notice.

“As a reminder, do not drink untreated surface water,” the city advised.

“We thank residents for their patience and understanding.

“We also want to thank City crews who are on site doing everything they can to return the system to full operational capacity.”

This just in:
The government has also requested that bears stop deficating in the Yukon River as well.
It would also be nice if they would stop crapping on walking trails.
Thanks

Excuse me but if this were a placer miner, the enforcers would put the boots to them. It is not okay to put untreated s**t or the variety of other stuff that people flush into their toilets into the Yukon River. So please cut the crap.

I was being facetious! And to answer your question at the end, the answer is yes!

Patti Eyre@ 'Can we drink untreated subsurface water?' Why would you want to.1) If its a well you can get it tested. 2) there's lots of fresh clear streams outside the city, and fresh water lakes for miles and miles. Note: WhitePass Rail wanted to use a form of agent orange on the weeds on the BC side of the border on tracks next to Bennet Lake. BC gave them permission. Bennet lake is a fresh water supply for Carcross. Yukon Land is not protected from abuse. The Guardians of the Land in Carcross have land claims money invested into the Tar Sands. Someone else's traditional territory. While talking about coordination of land protection between Atlin-Teslin and Carcross, Atlin Taku River Tlingit are trying to say Tagish is their territory. When talking about the land can the Administration Governments of these FN be trusted to protect the land?

Sounds like the old days when it wasn't unusual to see human made logs and TP floating in river. Things to look at if you were boating.

Gee...how 3rd world?
Send out a CoW PSA gaslighting on doing it for inclusion, make our newbies feel back home?
Work better than most civic propaganda I suspect with our citizenship of virtue diversity and inclusion at all costs.
...including our civic wizards doing exactly whatever they want!

"Can we drink untreated subsurface water?"

If you're a Yukon Liberal Party or Yukon Party voter, yes.

There will be fines for this illegal sewage dumping, right? Why do we even have a municipal government and pay taxes when they can't even get the basics done properly?

Have you picked up your free game of Cornhole? That’s right, free to any taxpayer today! on Aug 30, 2022 at 10:06 pm

I betcha if someone investigated the possibility that the actual source of the sewage problem is from an underground reservoir beneath 2071 - 2nd Avenue which contains half the worlds reserves of governmental “bull-shyt” from which the L-NDP alliance sustains itself.

In years with Liberal ‘giverments’ the reserve capacity is overwhelmed and the bull-shyt rises to critical levels. The pressure is too much and the bull-shyt cannot be contained anymore. It spills out into the natural world, poisoning it, as the public mind cannot sustain the continued assault of anymore bull-shyt.

They thought they had reserves for ‘power’ for decades to go… They greatly underestimated their use of bull-shyt… They were lavish in their giving of bull-shyt, spreading it everywhere… Here, take some more, and some more for you, and you… Everyone gets bull-shyt…

The City’s explanation is a cover up for their vampiristic masters at YTG… Sound familiar? Anyways, off to Home Hardware to pick up the giverment’s giveaway game of Cornhole. That’s right everyone, the givernment had said that everyone deserves to get Cornholed… And you thought that Get the D campaign was a one- off… Lol!!!

This will give the birds and plants in the wetlands across the river where it usually
pumped , a break for awhile.

Hard on the last remaining salmon in the river though.
Where are the Protect the Peel crowd now?

Well, well. Horror of horrors - just like Montreal!

The high and mighty liberal philosophy continues - "don't crap in the river - we will do it for you".
