WATERLOGGED – The City of Whitehorse has barricaded off part of the Riverfront Trail near Spook Creek Station.
Recent warm weather has caused flooding on the Riverfront Trail.
Recent warm weather has caused flooding on the Riverfront Trail.
City crews discovered flooding on the section of the trail between Spook Creek Station and Boston Pizza on Sunday after they were notified by a local who usually grooms the trails.
"He noticed water in the ditch by the rail bed, and then saw a considerable amount of water moving across the trail,” said Doug Hnatiuk, the city's projects and community development co-ordinator.
The man took pictures of the flooding and notified the city and the fire department.
The city has put up barricades in the area to block public access.
"There isn't much more we can do at this point, " said Hnatiuk.
The city has been monitoring the water levels and noticed they haven't risen significantly in the past 24 hours.
Hnatiuk said this is the first time the city has seen flooding in this area so it is a "bit of an anomoly.”
Earlier this fall, the pedestrian bridge by McIntyre Creek flooded, also due to a cold snap followed by unusually warm weather.
Mayor Bev Buckway is also asking residents to be careful.
"While only some trails in the Walmart area are affected, we are asking residents to exercise caution on all trails near the river, including the Riverfront Trail and the Millennium Trail,” she said Monday.
The city is asking anyone who sees flooding in additional areas to call Parks and Recreation Department at 668-8325.
"If we discover any trail areas that are, or may present, a safety risk, the city will exercise caution and block those areas off from public access,” said Hnatiuk.
