The Yukon government is out with the latest numbers on the employees affected by the vaccine mandate.
The Yukon government is out with the latest numbers on the employees affected by the vaccine mandate.
John Streicker, the minister responsible for the Public Service Commission, spoke to the Star Thursday afternoon.
He said 107 full-time permanent employees with the government are currently on unpaid leave after failing to provide the necessary document on their vaccination status.
Nearly 6,000 (5,767 people) government employees have provided the attestations the government requires to track whether they have been vaccinated, Streicker said.
Another 44 have asked for exemptions. Those requests haven’t been ruled on as yet.
That number represents approximately 95 per cent of the government workforce.
Another 204 on-call, casual and seasonal workers haven’t yet provided their documentation.
Streicker said an unknown number of those employees, as seasonal workers, aren’t being expected to provide the information until they resume working for the government.
That’s likely making the numbers look worse than they are.
He was particularly interested in refuting some numbers attributed to the Whitehorse Correction Centre earlier in the week by the Yukon Employees’ Union. The YEU suggested as many as 30 people at the centre were on unpaid leave.
The Department of Justice has 11 full-time workers on unpaid leave, with another 11 in the casual and on-call listings, the minister advised the Star.
Steicker said the number of guards on unpaid leave is nine, according to the information his staff provided, although that wasn’t necessarily updated on Thursday.
“It’s a very fluid situation,” he said.
Streicker said he expected those numbers will drop, but not rapidly.
Some of the people on unpaid leave might well be highly resistant to changing their views on the vaccine mandate, he said, but there was no way – beyond anecdotal information – to establish their numbers.
The Department of Health and Social Services continues to lead the way in terms of sheer numbers of employees on unpaid leave. However, it is also one of the largest government departments.
Twenty full-time employees are on unpaid leave, according to Streicker’s data, with 91 more casual and on-call workers on leave as well.
Streicker said there are no “significant clusters” in departments nor in the rural communities that he has been made aware of.
The government is not officially tracking numbers of workers on unpaid leave in allied businesses and organizations, Streicker said.
Some, such as ATCO Electric Yukon, haven’t finalized their own vaccine mandates as of yet, Streicker said.
Others, such as Yukon Energy, have synchronized vaccine mandates with the government.
Streicker said he is making efforts to have the number of workers updated weekly and possibly published on the government website.
The numbers are to be announced during the weekly COVID-19 briefings, which typically occur on Wednesdays.
Reached Thursday afternoon, YEU president Steve Geick had no comment on the numbers Streicker released.
“I have no way of challenging the numbers, and I’m not going down that road at this point,” he said.
Ted Hupé, the president of the Yukon Association of Educational Professionals (formerly the Yukon Teachers’ Association), said Thursay he “finally” had official numbers for education staff who are off the job on unpaid leave.
He said 13 teachers are affected across the Yukon, and nine educational assistants.
While the numbers are better than expected and somewhat manageable, the missing people are still placing more stress on schools, Hupé said.
Education professionals have been under mounting stress for nearly two years now due to the pandemic, Hupé added.
The government can try to replace those teachers and educational assistants with temporary or contract workers, he explained, but recruiting replacements is next to impossible.
There’s a variety of reasons for that, Hupé said. Due to COVID-19, fewer people are willing to consider moving from their current locations.
Many prospective workers are being put off by the housing shortage in the Yukon as well, Hupé said.
Even though the Yukon generally offers better rates of pay and more opportunity, the inability to find a place to live is scaring many people away, he suggested.
“I really kind of feel for the Department of Education,” Hupe said. “They’re in a tough position.”
Stephanie Cunha, a Yukon Energy spokeswoman, said, “Five Yukon Energy employees are on leave without pay as a result of Yukon Government’s vaccine mandate.
“This represents about five per cent of our labour force.”

Yup, all you people who are so privileged to work for the state. Smashing the red button won't make what I say less correct or justify you doing nothing. Great jobs Comrades, exactly what's wrong with this town. Go get real jobs.

Formerly, our fearless leaders were telling us that a vaccine mandate was necessary because vaccination rates were too low.
Now, they are crowing how vaccine mandates are a success because vaccine attestation rates are high.
How many people were coerced into choosing between their livelihood and taking a jab that they did not feel comfortable about taking?
How may people quit their jobs or retired to avoid having to provide their vaccine status?
Which personnel/methodology is GY using to count employees? How are they fudging the numbers to justify their latest messaging?
A couple of things I am sure of: 1. GY and the talking head politicians are lying; 2. they are cruel and heartless people.

No exemptions for pregnant women, no exemptions for people (like my friend) who are severely injured from the first Injection.
No exemptions for anyone that has been able to work from home this whole plandemic.
Didn't Hanley say were aiming for 80%? Now Look where we are now...? You are hell bent on injecting our precious children. This whole thing is very evil and nefarious.
Streicker gave some numbers of people affected by this illegal breach of Our Constitution. There are a few other very essential services that are worth mentioning.
Did you know that there are now no Fire, EMS or Child Protective services in almost all the communities?
How many city workers lost their jobs?
How many managers and supervisors resigned or retired early by the end of November?
I know that there was over 1000 people affected by this government mandate just in last month. And there are many more affected as companies decide to comply with the same discrimination practices.
You are all on the wrong side of history and I will never comply.

@pfft!!
Having a government job is not a right or a privilege. It is a drain on the rest of the Private sector as you provide no service, no goods, no innovation and only hinder the private sector. Silly tax sponges.

"There’s a variety of reasons for that, Hupé said. Due to COVID-19, fewer people are willing to consider moving from their current locations."
Except more people are moving right now than probably any time in the last 70 years. Please expand on the variety of other reasons.
So the jail removed the unvaxxed staff and now they are locked down because of an outbreak. Who are we to blame for the outbreak without the scapegoat? Maybe a C.O. brought it in. At least the inmates cannot complain to the outside world about their living conditions to visitors.
I am looking out my window at an empty YG building. No cars, and the lights are all out. It appears they have been sent home. The unvaxxed staff has been removed and still they are are working from home because the vax they are forcing on people does not work. "Go home it doesn't work". "Get boosted, it's your best protection". Is it a logical fallacy or double think?
Since we copy every other province we should be fully locked down by Christmas to protect all of the triple vaxxed. Anyone who thinks mandates are a good idea is either evil or an an imbecile. Perhaps both. Everyone needs to ask themselves how giving up their freedoms to get their freedoms back is working out for them.
Remember when YG staff "work" from home they get their full salary. When private sector has to deal with restrictions, businesses shut down.

I love vaccines. I got my vaccine on the first day I was eligible. However, people are complex. They live lives. They have their reasons. Telling them they can't come to work, get no pay, and don't even have their request for an exemption considered (yet) is just cruel. This disease is not deadly enough for such measures, not even close. I am solidly thumbs up on vaccines, and solidly thumbs down on mandates.

The Yukon Liberal Government has achieved 95% compliance.
Just a few points shy of the recovery rate for this “deadly” Kung flu, if you are remotely healthy.

HolyF@%k@ 'now run along you'll be late for class.' Yes, I know a lot about BS. I got my MBS at the class of '68' Keno Silver Mine. BS mining takes place outside the mine in the bars. Like BS politics takes place on the comments pages. Put your money where your mouth is, tell us the real numbers, your source of data and factual evidence so we can check it with Access to Information. The BS response would be the Govt are so corrupt they have already covered up the evidence, but you have insider information from a double agent working for the new East European Yukon Freedom Party. Their supporters main freedom is the freedom to BS on the comments pages.

The numbers might be off by a dozen here or a dozen there, sure. Maybe even by one hundred overall, okay.
Still a far cry from the supposed ‘thousands’ of people the hyperbolic blowhards claim to speak for. Just goes to show how inaccurate the loudest voices really are. There is no silent majority of opposition, just a small minority of epic trouble makers.
Hopefully, some of our more bloated institutions will learn they can do more with less and everyone’s work environment will improve overnight due to a sudden absence of the folks who make everything more difficult than it needs to be.

"Attestation " basically a confirmation without proof that they have been vaccinated. I wonder how many that have attested have not been vaccinated. Not that I care, just wondering.

I normally don't comment, but I have had it with this governments actions on vaccine mandates! Do you realize that you are creating so much stress and hardship to so many families in the YUKON? Many who voted for you, but definitely won't ever again! I personally know people who will need to see mental health professionals due to hardships now occurring with families suffering with leave without PAY! What are you thinking ??? As stated above...regular testing of both vaccinated and unvaccinated is a much better solution than ruining people's lives. You should definitely be ashamed of yourselves Yukon government!
Of course you are probably thinking.... we don't care if we get elected again.... we have done our time and now we can sit back and collect our pensions while so many families and individuals suffer from these actions! Shame on you!

PEOPLE PLEASE
In no way does Mr Streicker's tireless, energetic support of BIG PHARMA have anything to do with any financial or other purposes whatsoever. He is OBVIOUSLY purely working for the health of all Yukoners, even those who are being rarely hurt from the multiple injections they are being steadily coerced and manipulated and cajoled into taking against their will.
Thank you John., thank you so very much, with large big tears of gratitude...

117 FTEs gone and nothing of value was lost. A couple came crawling back a few days later and provided their attestation. In my place of work, we are happy to have a safe work environment with educated devoted professionals. Gone are the tin foil hatters.
The AOCs and Seasonals haven’t lost jobs because they aren’t even working and since when did the Right become the champions of organized labour? 2 years ago they would be cheering the loss of public service jobs.
At the end of the day it’s the 5% being vocal because they have nothing better to do and no marketable skills to offer.

So ...Mr Streicker, you said because of those employees that decided not to get vaccinated, now the education in Yukon is in trouble.
WRONG
This is because of you and the government. I hope soon this will come to light and you all will be held accountable.
We are speaking of maybe 10% of Yukoners not wanting to get vaccinated, they would even be ok to not be able to fly and also grieved not being able to go swimming or drink smtg in a bar.
They are very respectful to other Yukoners and actually probably are way less possible spreaders as some vaccinated that keep being with lots of people at sport events, that travel and bring back new variants.
And even with only 10% that did not want the vaccine, you are still not happy? Come on, if we don't have herd immunity by now, well kind of means maybe that these vaccines don't work.
Just think about this.
I am for Freedom of choice.
People that want to be protected have a tool and people that believe in their own immune system should be able to have a life in society.
Thank you

I know of one person in the groups listed that refuses to be vaccinated due to his religious beliefs. So now being the sole bread winner, that person is sacrificing his whole family for idealism. God doesn't save you from COVID but will certainly make you sick - not to mention spreading it to the rest of us. Now if you have a real medical exemption, that's another story.

Ummm no, Mr. Streicker. There are so many people who decided to retire early or quit because of your insane new policy. You can’t say the full time permanent people are the only ones worth counting. Those 200+ part time, aux or casual workers are 200+ families without paycheques. Almost 400 families total right before Christmas plus all the ones who had to quit so they could obtain employment for Christmas. No matter how you try to spin this, you let employees down. You Liberals are grinches this holiday season. And you don’t even care.
