The City of Chortkiv, Ukraine has asked the City of Whitehorse to become sister cities, Mayor Laura Cabott told council at its meeting Monday.

She noted Chortkiv is near the size of Whitehorse, with 36,000 people, and is located in western Ukraine.

Chortkiv wants to twin to promote mutual partnership and exchange experience between the two cities with regard to economic development, cultural tourism, art, sports and education, said Cabott.

The mayor proposed a resolution to direct administration to review and apply applicable guidelines within Whitehorse’s Sister Cities Policy with regard to Chortkiv’s request.

Administration would also be directed to undertake an analysis of Whitehorse’s current sister city relationships, the capacity to add an additional city and to look at community support for the request.

Administration would also be directed to make recommendations to mayor and council, including the level of the relationship, if any.

Whitehorse has three sister cities: Juneau, Ushiku, Japan, and Lancieux, France.

Cabott’s resolution is scheduled to go back to council for a vote at next Monday’s meeting.

It’s understood that it takes time and effort to establish and maintain sister city relationships, requiring the support and participation of city council, administration and the citizens of Whitehorse, the mayor said.

It seems to me that it was just a short time ago that we got rid of a bunch of sister cities because their only purpose seemed to be an opportunity for city staff to take trips. Let's not start the list again.

Don't be a vatnik Max Mack, dictator Vlad and his oligarch buddies did the looting and it started 10 seconds after the Wall fell. Just the way it is and always has been in the that country dating back to the czars. And peace is easy, all RF has to do is leave Ukraine.

Hey SD...many of your points are factual.
That said, reads like ya do pay a level of attention.
Without intentionally patronizing ya, if I may illustrate why this international virtue will happen.

Factoring in our flaming Red civic head wizard, her cronies that warm chairs with her...
Our coronated also flaming Red territorial ah um...”leader(s)” one commi the other commi lite, our Teflon coated fortunate son..PM Blackface itself
& Freeman the descendant of a Nazi proper supporter via collaboration Gramps...is her self a WEF member the anointed one PM Mcgropy are absolute puppets of said WEF?

Whatever that idiot in Beijing 2.0 is told by Clause the 4th Reich leader at the WEF, is TOLD to Mr Clean desk...will be told to our wee civic chapter of the WEF alleged leader whatsherface .
Considering the need for division, the blood need be spilt to achieve their great reset, 4th Reich wtfe...it will happen.

Borders matter away from ours, guns for Ukraine but we cannot be trusted with said guns, the climate change cult also supports war it seems?

Splitting atoms is no biggie for Mother Earth apparently , but YOUR carbon footprint is...not the elites?
Sounds ranty...but trust me the tapestry has been woven by many many fools, idiots and megalomaniacs. We are (well most are) caught up in the pattern!
Our wee civic chapter is but one example in a epic gaslighting time.
Epic state including civic level gaslighting with a three year heavy dose, and now apparently “mental health “ is the latest civic virtue.

Anyone else feel like a Ho getting smacked/beat hard on the daily by your pimp or pimps these days?

@ Matthew, What's the point of any sister city. Having said that, if Whitehorse wants to welcome Chortkiv, I wouldn't mind the gesture at all. I think there have been exchanges and certain public relations events related to the other sister cities, and personally, I like being more exposed to Ukrainian culture.

@Sarah Davison

I agree with your sentiment that we (Canada) should be pushing for a peace deal, but I have to disagree that NATO is not at war with the Russian Federation.

It should be pretty obvious to everyone by now that the US-led NATO alliance and the West (the so-called "international rules-based order", aka the USA) in general is at war with the RF. The USA alone has pumped more than $100 billion into Ukraine in 2022 -- this amount does not include covert funding.

The USA (NATO/West) wants anything but peace, and will continue to push for war until they can once again steal Russia's resources as the West did in the 1990s and 2000s. 100s of billions of dollars -- perhaps trillions -- of state wealth was stolen from the former USSR.

The real goal of prolonging war is to keep Russia weak, vulnerable, unable to integrate into the EU, and unable to become a regional power. Ideally, the USA wants to balkanize Russia and overthrow Putin.

Sadly, Canada is 100% behind this project. We are at war with the Russian Federation in all but name.

Which Russian city is Whitehorse pairing with?
NATO - and that includes Canada - is not at war with Russia.
Ukraine is not an ally of Canada.
Ukraine is not a member of NATO.
Ukraine is definitely NOT an ally of Whitehorse.
The City of Whitehorse has NO MANDATE to involve the people of this city in this war.
Don't you dare.
There have been at least six occasions when this war could have ended, and EVERY TIME political representatives from NATO countries put pressure on Ukraine not to proceed.
If you support Ukraine, you will recognise that the aggressors against Ukraine aren't just Russian.
And you'll conduct yourself in minimally responsible fashion and agitate for peace, not more war.

War isn't a fashion statement. Ukraine is a particularly disgusting war and it's killing tens of thousands of people, both Russians and Ukrainians.
You don't have to be a particularly responsible local politician, merely a half decent human being, to recognise that all lives matter, not just some, AND THAT MEANS YOUR ONLY PUBLIC POSITION SHOULD ONLY BE FOR PEACE.
Grow up.

Anybody in the City of Whitehorse seriously considers twinning with a Ukainian city, it should be willing to join the 150,000 Ukrainians - a conservative estimate - whose blood is now seeping into the soil of Ukraine.
