The Yukon's premier doesn't want to endorse one federal candidate but that hasn't stopped two of his caucus members from nominating one.
Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang and Southern Lakes MLA Patrick Rouble both signed the nomination form for Liberal candidate Larry Bagnell for the June 28 election.
Premier Dennis Fentie has made it clear his party, which has no affiliation with any federal party, will not support any federal team because it will have to work with whoever is in power.
Lang was asked by the Star last week if he signed Bagnell's nomination form and is supporting the Liberal candidate.
'These are private things,' Lang responded. He said it had nothing to do with his job and that he can support Bagnell 100 per cent if he wants to but he would not publicly say if he's doing that.
Recently, Fentie said Bagnell has done a good job as the Yukon's member of Parliament.
Last January, Health and Social Services Minister Peter Jenkins said Bagnell has done such a good job as MP that he will likely be re-elected.
Rouble and Lang were not the only MLAs to nominate Bagnell Liberal Leader Pat Duncan also signed the nomination form.
Bagnell's list also included a number of former Liberal MLAs: Dale Eftoda, Sue Edelman, Dennis Schneider, Pam Buckway and Scott Kent.
Some failed Liberal candidates in the 2002 election also signed the form, including Arthur Mitchell, former Dawson City mayor Glen Everitt and Whitehorse Coun. Dave Austin.
Other notables on the form include:
-
the Yukon's Liberal Senator, Ione Christensen;
-
former Whitehorse city councillor Linda Casson; and
-
former Yukon Supreme Court justice Harry Maddison.
Fifty signatures are needed to nominate a candidate. However, Elections Canada encourages the contenders to get more than 50 signature in case not all can be found on the voters' list.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the only two nominations which were submitted and completely checked were Bagnell's and New Democratic Party candidate Pam Boyde's.
Marijuana Party candidate Sean Davey's was still being reviewed yesterday. According to Marijuana Party Leader Boris St. Maurice this morning, Davey's nomination has now been accepted.
Notable signatures on Boyde's nomination include two more Yukon MLAs: territorial NDP Leader Todd Hardy and fellow New Democrat Steve Cardiff.
Other notables on the NDP include:
-
former NDP government leader and Boyde's former boss, Piers McDonald;
-
former NDP member of Parliament, Louise Hardy;
-
Maddison's daughter and former NDP staffer, Sidney Maddison; and
-
Whitehorse Coun. Yvonne Harris.
The other two who have indicated they will run in the election, Geoff Capp of the Christian Heritage Party and Conservative James Hartle, have until next Monday, June, 7, to get their nomination forms into the local returning office.
