Two Vuntut Gwitchin council members suspended
Two members of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation council have been suspended,
Two members of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation council have been suspended, pending an internal investigation. The deputy chief is facing two impaired driving-related charges.
Chief Dana Tizya-Tramm spoke with the Star Thursday afternoon about the suspensions.
He explained that he cannot reveal any specific information about why Deputy Chief Cheryl Charlie and Coun. Darius Elias have been suspended, due to the internal investigation.
Tizya-Tramm, who became the chief earlier this year, said it’s not his place to pass judgment on those involved.
“This is all an internal procedure,” Tizya-Tramm said. He clarified that Charlie and Elias were both suspended due to the investigation.
Charlie’s impaired charges are outside of Vuntut Gwitchin’s jurisdiction, the chief said.
The Star has obtained Charlie’s official charge document.
Both counts date back to June 6 in Old Crow. The first count is impaired driving, while the second count is driving while over the legal limit.
Tizya-Tramm said the suspension will last until the end of the First Nation’s investigation.
Both Charlie’s and Elias’ positions on council are secure.
Tizya-Tramm clarified that nothing has happened that would prompt their constitutional ejections from the council.
He said he has respect for both councillors, and want to ensure the proper process is followed. He wants to ensure both have support.
“This is a function for good governance for our people and our institution,” Tizya-Tramm said.
Elias has been a Liberal, independent and Yukon Party member of the territorial legislature.
Pauline Frost, now a Liberal cabinet minister, defeated Elias in the November 2016 territorial election.

Geeze Darius. AGAIN? This guy needs some serious help apparently. Good on the people for not electing him as Chief (he ran).

My suspicion would be that, because of past similar charges, Darius is being held accountable as well. It wouldn't be fair to allow one to remain and to let one go over the same type of charges.
