Two Whitehorse men died in a collision early Sunday morning on the Alaska Highway near Crestview. Their names have not been released.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service confirmed Monday afternoon it’s investigating the deaths stemming from the two-vehicle collision. It was notified of the accident shortly after midnight.
A blue Dodge Dakota truck had been travelling south while a Ford Explorer had been proceeding north.
The vehicles collided near the centre line of the highway, near the entrance to Azure Road, the coroner’s office said.
Both drivers had been the only occupants of their vehicles.
Whitehorse RCMP and the Whitehorse Fire Department attended the scene.
The Dakota had been driven by a 27-year-old, while the Explorer had been occupied by a 51-year-old.
No other details have been released. The Star’s inquiry to the RCMP for information on the collision was not responded to.
“We want to remind everyone travelling on Yukon roads and highways to take extreme caution when driving regardless of the season,” the coroner’s office said.
“We urge all travellers throughout the territory to be aware of your surroundings, drive attentively and always think safety first,” the coroner’s office said.
“The Yukon Coroner’s Service extends our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of both individuals who tragically lost their lives.
“We would also like to show our appreciation for the assistance of the RCMP and the fire department for their response to this unfortunate incident.”
