Whitehorse RCMP are encouraging businesses to use security measures in protecting their property after two shops had their windows smashed overnight Friday.

Police were called to the North End Gallery at around 7:08 a.m. Saturday.

An unknown amount of ivory carvings had been stolen overnight after thieves entered the First Avenue store through the smashed window, RCMP noted in a statement released late this morning.

Three hours later, at 10:15 a.m., police were called to Centennial Video in Porter Creek where a window had also been smashed. It's unknown if anything was stolen, RCMP said.

It's also unknown if the two incidents are related.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Whitehorse detachment at 667-5571 or, if they prefer to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Businesses can take security measures by installing alarm systems, motion sensors, video systems, secure storage for valuables, limiting how much cash is left at the site after it's closed and using lighting in and around the property.
