Turning point reached as COVID rules loosened

By Chuck Tobin on August 4, 2021
As students and staff prepare to return to school this month, the importance of being vaccinated was emphasized during this morning’s weekly update on the COVID-19 situation in the territory.
Education Minister Jeanie McLean and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, said being vaccinated is the most effective way for Yukoners to protect themselves, their family and friends and the community as a whole.
Hanley said today’s lifting of restrictions such as mandatory masking in public spaces is linked to the high rate of vaccination among Yukoners.
There is still a ways to go, though, he said.
Hanley said students will not be required to wear masks in the classroom, but will need to wear them in the public spaces, such as the
foyer, hallways and on the school buses.
There are response plans in place to address any outbreaks in schools that may occur, he said.
Hanley said there were some cases among students at the tail end of 2020-21 school year, but they were not tied to transmission in the
classroom. Rather, they were linked to groups of students participating in organized events.
It’s important for students to return to school, to learn in school and participate in school with their fellow students, he said.
The territory is seeing about six new cases a day, he added.
Tuesday’s daily update, for instance, reported seven new cases from noon Monday to noon Tuesday. There have been six Yukon deaths since June 1 and eight altogether from COVID-related causes.
While 80 per cent of the territory’s adult population is vaccinated, along with 65 per cent of youth between the ages of 12 and 17, the goal is to reach full vaccination for 90 to 95 per cent of the territory’s population, Hanley indicated.
He said it’s only a matter of time until the COVID-19 Delta variant, said to be even more infectious than the Gamma strains, reaches the
Yukon – if it isn’t already here.
It will target those who are not vaccinated, he said.
Of the 14 COVID patients who have been medevaced out of the territory, Hanley said, 12 were not vaccinated.
With the rate of vaccination and decreasing case rates, it’s no longer defensible to impose restrictions on people’s rights and freedoms, he said.
Hanley noted businesses like retail shops and restaurants can still impose their own requirements for mask use, and he encourages
Yukoners to follow the guidance of the business owners.
Masks will still be required at the offices of such health care providers as doctors and dentists, he pointed out.
He said while the use of masks is no longer mandatory for indoor spaces, it’s strongly recommended.
The Education minister said by following Hanley’s advice, officials expect to have another successful school year.
“The number-one priority is always the safety of our staff and the children,” McLean said.
She noted the vaccinations are available for students who were born in 2009 and onward even if the student has not turned 12 yet.
Secondary school students who use public transit to get to and from school will be required to follow the guidelines in place by the transit authorities, she said.
With the government lifting the requirement for the use of masks in indoor public places, so too has the City of Whitehorse.
The city too, however, is strongly recommending the continued use of masks in indoor spaces and on its buses.
Changes effective today include:
• Mask use in indoor spaces will no longer be mandatory but is strongly encouraged, particularly when people are in crowded, close quarters where it is difficult to physically distance.
• The following establishments have the right to request that their clients wear masks before entering a space and their requests should be respected: retail shops and grocers, bars and restaurants, recreational centres and public or private transit.
• Self-isolation after domestic travel will no longer be required for vaccinated or unvaccinated people.
Bars and restaurants will be able to return to full capacity for bar and countertop service.
The following measures will remain in place:
• Contact tracing information sheets at bars and restaurants.
• Gathering sizes remain the same.
Social gatherings are limited to 20 people indoors, with physical distancing and limited to 100 outdoors with physical distancing.
Organized gatherings, both indoor and out, are limited to 200, with physical distancing.
• Unvaccinated individuals should stick to six and keep their circle small.
• Mask use will continue at airports and in offices of health and allied health professionals, including physicians, dentists and massage
therapists.
• Gathering limits remain in gyms, recreation centres and fitness studios.

@ Juniper - Well of course just masks don't prevent the virus. It is using all precautions of the masks, sanitizing and social distancing together that prevents spreading.

It's good to know that those who are not vaccinated are the ones hunted by the Delta. Soon I imagine to have a lot less anti vaxers around to clutter up the comment section with their own brand of right wing nonsense.
We now are entering a time where money is more important then lives and the tragedy is that this economic boom will be borne at the expenses of our young children.
Myself, I am so glad that I can hold my young child back from school in order to protect the most vulnerable person in my house hold, it's unfortunate that more families are not able to also enjoy this luxury.
The Yukon business elite win, once again, All in the quest for money. It's so sickening.

An excellent example of how misinformation and outright lies get posted and shared. I've seen this video over the past few days, and this guy didn't win anything, quite the opposite - and as the statement from jccf says, has nothing to do with Alberta's lifting of restrictions. Ugh - I still don't know if some people are just gullible and will believe anything, or if they know this stuff is crap and re-post it anyway (and I don't know what's worse) "Posted On: August 5, 2021
The Justice Centre issues a statement on issues when we receive a great deal of email on a topic and/or general misunderstanding of an issue.Mr. King’s case does not appear to be a win at this point, however we do wish him well on having his ticket thrown out.
There is no indication that Mr. King’s case is connected to the relaxing of Covid restrictions in Alberta which fully opened on July 1, 2021. The Government of Alberta states they have opened the province due to achieving the government’s stated goal of 70% of Albertans receiving their first vaccine. Whether that is the reason, or there are other reasons, remains to be discovered in future court hearings."

Ethical doctors and ivermectin on Aug 6, 2021 at 7:35 am
@Enough - all those things you mentioned are absolutely good advice for healthy lifestyles. Not one of them, however, will prevent a new virus that our immune systems haven't encountered. Those fringe treatments? Follow the money when you're being sold vitamins and treatments for horse parasites and scabies and severe lice infestations (ie ivermectin).
From Texas poison control spokesperson “Most overdoses will be mild and simply result in some gastrointestinal distress and maybe some drowsiness, but severe overdose can cause significant neurological toxicity,” the Texas poison control worker said. “The irony is, in a severe ivermectin overdose (which is rare, you really have to be slamming this stuff to achieve that) patients will end up needing to be intubated to protect their airway, meanwhile, a lot of them are taking the ivermectin to allegedly treat their COVID… to avoid ultimately being intubated and placed on a ventilator.”

@scotch.... you do realize it's the vaccinated people who think they're bulletproof and ignoring safety protocols who are spreading covid right? I think you better check your science.

It was really nice today, I saw a couple of maskers, but I primarily saw teeth, and sparkling eyes. I hadn't realized how much I enjoy people smiling at me. Smiling back, chatting a minute. How are you? to strangers.. I saw a woman in a lovely dress, and i stopped and commented. She commented that she hadn't felt like dressing up with all the covid crap going on. There was a girl, at Rikki's.. a waitress, who has served us several times. She did not have a mask on today, and, OMG, she is beautiful.. Never got to see that.
I have never been against masking..I have always been against forced masking. Masked and distancing produced over 500 infections. Lockdown did not work. Was great for government and government employees though. We do not need a state of emergency declaration, really...we never did. It just favors a dictator style government. Does nothing to benefit the people. Oh yeah..lock down didn't work because people didn't wear a mask..yes, they did. But, masks don't work. You need 3 masks and a special filter. Or a 3 ply mask with removable filter that you change every day and wash daily. How many did that? Social distancing? I wore a mask faithfully, because the law said I had to or possibly pick up a $6,000.00 max fine. People who want a mask. Wear it. Want to stay home? do it. You do your thing, I'll do mine. I'll leave you alone. You leave me alone.
Covid, Alpha. Beta.. Gamma. Delta.. Epsilon. Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi, Omicron, Phi, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Sigma, Upsilon, Chi, and Omega. Covid..names drawn from the Greek alphabet. So, is that an indication that we have a few more variants on the way? There are several variants out, but the one hitting the most news is Delta. It would be naive to think with all the traveling Yukoner's and visitors to the territory, that Delta is not already here.
As always, i always speak just for myself. In Dec. and Jan when people were coming home, or going back out, school, Christmas travellers, I was sick as a dog, so was my best friend and 2 of my co workers. My Dr. said at the time, there was a flu that didn't make it to the vaccine. The flu vaccine is a probability thing. It is comprised of the most strains of flu coming out this year. In retrospect, I think an awful lot of us already contracted covid, and recovered. It wasn't until March and April that lockdowns got going. Covid is huge. I don't think it can be contained now. Its going to have to work its way out. or, get in line with the yearly flu vaccinations.

i have a question... on Aug 5, 2021 at 2:56 pm
about those posters that businesses have put up. I believe they are all the same, and they say something like, masks aren't required but appreciated. From his interview on the CBC with Leonard Linklater, it seems reasonable to assume that Brendan Hanley has basically told businesses to keep the masks, and he told us fairly vehemently via radio that we should comply with businesses if they "choose" to ask for masks. So these posters...did they come from public health? Did the business association get together and distribute them?
As far as I can see, Hanley's campaign to talk out of two sides of his mouth is working. Personally, I think removing the mask restriction is the least we can expect, given the bar they set for vaccinations, but they're not even doing that.
For the record, the interview was the least coherent he's been, to my ears. Maybe the tension of trying to look like he's working with the government, when he's clearly not, isn't helping his clarity.
If government ministers can't cut through the confusion that Hanley is sowing, let's just not pretend that anything is different today than it was on Tuesday.

Ethical doctors that follow their medical oath would be advising us on how to stay healthy. Like healthy diet, quit smoking, regular exercise in sunshine & fresh air, plenty of restful sleep, positive attitude.
They would honestly tell us about the risks involved in medical procedures (and there are many severe risks with regards to this experimental injection), and tell us about the options, i.e. therapeutics such as Vitamin D and Ivermectin. But such honest doctors are increasingly censored. Ask yourself why. You know, the "Great Reset" agenda.

What relaxation? It's all about re-election optics. In fact they're still pushing for mandatory masks.
In an August 5, 2021 CTV New video, Trudeau announced MANDATORY jabs for federal employees and potentially also for federally-regulated industries.
Up 25 Down 24

Hanley still pushing the covid experimental jab which has not even been tested for long-term adverse effects. This jab doesn't seem to be that effective anyway. Look up those regions with high rates of covid jab that are now experiencing surges of covid among the vaccinated.
Examples:
“Large outbreak in Massachusetts mostly infected vaccinated people, CDC study finds”, July 30, 2021, The Associated Press
"Israeli PM: Serious COVID Cases to Quadruple in 20 Days, We Must Impose New Restrictions", August 3, 2021, Haaretz
Yukoners should never have been restricted in the first place. Restrictions can only DELAY the inevitable spread of a very infectious RESPIRATORY virus, no matter how many vaccines or lockdowns. Cloth masks do NOT block viruses. It’s now endemic and mutating regularly, has a high recovery rate, and is treatable with therapeutics. That’s what numerous experts are trying to tell us, but are getting censored by big pharma.

Make a decision on Aug 5, 2021 at 8:54 am
So are the restrictions lifted or not? Can someone make a decision and stick to it? Why "lift" restrictions if you are going to strongly encouraged that everyone still wear masks? It's still not a choice if a lot of businesses are sticking to that. Rip the bandaid off. No one said that anyone couldn't still wear a mask so let the rest of us breathe and make our own choice of how to mitigate our own, personal COVID risk.

Hanley's new goal is "full vaccination for 90 to 95 per cent of the territory's population." Let's ignore the niggling detail that these targets are completely arbitrary.
Children under the age of 12 are not eligible for any covid vaccine according to Health Canada's interim approvals.
For Dec 2020, the Yukon Bureau of Statistics estimated the population <= 14 at 6,955. Let's assume the 10-14 age group is evenly split 50/50 between those under 12 and those over 12 (since the 12-14 age group is not reported separately). Back of napkin calculations yields 6,955-1190=5,765 kids under 12 years of age that cannot receive any vaccine.
The population for December 2020 is estimated at 42,827. Remove the ineligible kids. That leaves 42,827-5,765=37,062 that are eligible to receive a vaccine.
Hanley's requirement of "90 to 95%" of the population yields between 42,827*0.9=38,544 and 42,827*0.95=40,686.
So, even Hanley's lower goal of 90% of the population exceeds 100% of the population eligible to receive the vaccine.
I'd be interested to know how he's going to pull that off.

And giving people the vaccination - which still hasn't been fully tested, is a bad idea. Children and teens are still physically developing to the age of 18. If many of these people get serious ailments and disabilities when they get into adulthood, who is going to shoulder the blame? Will those responsible go the Liberal way and blame it on someone else? Maybe even Donald Trump, since the vaccines were created during his warp "speed time" in office. But you can be sure the Liberals won't take the heat over it.

McLean: "The number-one priority is always the safety of our staff and the children"
Hanley: "All the more caution must be taken by those who are not yet eligible vaccine."
Sounds like a bit of a contradiction. Putting the impetuous on those under twelve to ensure their own safety is ridiculous. The government should be ashamed of the way they have disregarded the impact on families with young children. Often leaving parents having to stay home with kids who can't go to daycare or school because it is more important to burden people who travel with self isolation. This year will be much worse for many because the government is more interested in appeasing the few than looking after the many.
