A section of the Dempster Highway is closed today due to a commercial truck veering into the ditch at kilometre 455.
The Department of Environment received a report of the accident Wednesday afternoon, and staff are investigating today. It’s not believed the tank is punctured, and there isn’t expected to be any risk to the ground or water.
Heather Avery with the Department of Environment told the Star this morning that an environmental compliance officer is en route to the scene with the commercial vehicle’s response team.
Avery called the closure a “precautionary measure.”
The highway is currently closed between the Wiley Airstrip and Sheep Creek between kilometres 388 and 432.
The closure is in the Eagle Plains area, 400 km north of Dawson City.
Plans for the reopening of the highway won’t be made until the investigation has been completed.
