Over the next two days, city transit officials will be learning what other communities are doing to get residents from Point A to Point B as well as letting others know about Whitehorse's updated system.

The city is hosting a meeting of the prairie chapter (made up of a number northern and prairie communities that have transit systems) of Canadian Urban Transit Association today and tomorrow at the Yukon Transportation Museum.

Representatives are in the city for the meeting from transit services in Albert, including Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer; Saskatchewan, including Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw; and Manitoba, including Brandon and Winnipeg; as well as Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories.

In a statement Friday, Mayor Bev Buckway said the meeting will give the city an opportunity to showcase its new loop-based bus service that was updated in July 2011 as well as learn from the other communities.

"Since implementing our new schedule, the city's transit system has been attracting attention from our riders as well as questions from other jurisdictions,” transit manager Cheri Malo said in a statement.

"We look forward to sharing our successes and learning from our colleagues from other jurisdictions.”

Figures from the city show ridership rising by 7,801 from July 2011 (when ridership was at 28,195 for that month) to July 2012, when there were 35,996 rides taken by bus in the city.
