In the wake of a fresh landslide along Robert Service Way on Monday morning, the city has implemented traffic signal timing changes at two key intersections to try to mitigate rush-hour traffic congestion.

Those intersections are Two Mile Hill and Range Road, and Two Mile Hill and the Alaska Highway. The changes to improve traffic flow went into effect today.

“These modifications are expected to improve some of the movements at the intersections, but the intersections will continue to be busy during morning peak times,” the city said in a statement Monday afternoon.

“We encourage travellers to continue adjusting travel times, and consider car-pooling, using other modes of transportation, or working from home, where possible.

“Please continue to be aware of each other, be patient, and be kind.”

Tracy Allen, the city’s director of operations, briefed city council on the plan during its Monday evening meeting.

Monday morning’s minor slide was detected near the larger one that occurred April 8, prompting the second extended closure of Robert Service Way in the span of a year.

There is no planned reopening date. The artery was closed for seven weeks after the April 30, 2022 slide.

“Residents can expect to see continued activity along the escarpment such as groundwater seepage and minor sliding as the temperature warms,” the city said.

“Significant movement such as débris travelling beyond the barriers should be reported to 9-1-1.

“We encourage residents to reach out if they have any questions or concerns at: https://engagewhitehorse.ca/escarpment-2023

On Monday evening, council approved Coun. Mellisa Murray’s motion urging the city to ask the Yukon government to provide financial support for free Whitehorse Transit service while Robert Service Way is off-limits.

Free busing was provided during most of the 2022 closure in an attempt to reduce the number of commuter vehicles on the roads.

The Confidence and Supply Agreement the governing Liberals and NDP signed on Jan. 31 provides for free Whitehorse Transit service.

Details and a starting date of that plan remain unknown.
