The Watson Lake RCMP seized $20,000 during a suspected proceeds of crime investigation during Canada Road Safety Week.

"The investigation is ongoing,” RCMP Sgt. Don Rogers said Wednesday.

The owners of the seized money will have to prove they obtained it through legitimate means. Otherwise, it will be confiscated.

No more information will be revealed until the investigation is concluded, Rogers said.

The money bust came during a traffic crackdown that saw Watson Lake RCMP strengthen their presence on the roads and highways surrounding their community.

Shawn Pollard, head of the RCMP's traffic division, said Wednesday the force is focusing its attention on identifying aggressive, distracted and impaired drivers.

They hope to educate the public on the dangers of these driving practices, he said.

"Educating the public in safe driving practices is a priority. We're trying to raise awareness about the consequences of unsafe driving,” he said.

Additional officers from B.C. are assisting during this period, and some officers are working longer hours.

The Victoria Day long weekend was identified as a strategic week to hold the traffic crackdown.

That's because many recent graduates celebrate, and good weather prompts residents to travel to campgrounds and other communities.

The RCMP were also able to identify five trucks with safety defects during routine inspections, and removed them from the road.

"It's going really well so far,” said Pollard.

Rogers said drivers pulled over or stopped at roadblocks are often understanding and appreciative.

"I think most people are grateful for us being out there on the road and keeping them safe,” he said.

"Even when they're getting a ticket, they're thankful that we're out doing our job and keeping them safe.”

Officers across the territory are participating in Canada Road Safety Week.
